Frank Baum, the author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Gregory Maguire, who created the name for his 1995 novel Wicked, says he formed it by playing with Baum’s initials: L-F-B. The name belongs to Maguire’s reinterpretation, not Baum’s original story.
What does Elphaba’s name mean?
Gregory Maguire has explained that he invented “Elphaba” by reshaping the initials of Lyman Frank Baum, better known as L. Frank Baum. In a 2024 interview with GBH, Maguire said: “I invented the name by playing with the initials of the author, Lyman Frank Baum.” The familiar explanation is that the sound of L-F-B became “Elphaba.”
Maguire says he tried forms including “Lafaba” and “Lafeyba” before deciding on Elphaba. The documented meaning is the Baum-initials tribute; there is no established separate dictionary meaning for the syllables.
Why Elphaba is not named in Baum’s original Oz story
Baum created the Oz world and the Wicked Witch of the West, but Maguire says the Witch is unnamed in the original Baum books and the classic 1939 film. “Elphaba” is Maguire’s addition, so it should not be treated as a name from Baum’s original telling.

How the name connects the book, film, and musical
Wicked is a later retelling of Oz, not simply another name for Baum’s story. The official Wicked educational guide describes the musical as based on Maguire’s novel, which in turn draws on Baum’s novel and the 1939 film.
| Work | Role in the story’s history | What it establishes about Elphaba |
|---|---|---|
| The Wonderful Wizard of Oz | Baum’s original Oz story | The Wicked Witch is not named Elphaba in Baum’s telling. |
| Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (1995) | Maguire’s reinterpretation of Oz | Maguire created the name Elphaba. |
| Wicked musical (2003) | Stage adaptation of Maguire’s retelling | It carries forward Maguire’s named, perspective-centered character. |
What the name says—and what it does not
The Baum tribute connects Maguire’s character to the source material, but it is not a coded explanation of her personality or a second etymology. Maguire’s stated themes are broader. On his official FAQ, he describes his interest in evil and in how an “inhuman enemy” can be used to legitimize violence. In the GBH interview, he also discusses reconsidering the Wizard’s actions and the structures of power. Those ideas help explain the perspective of Wicked; they do not change the stated origin of Elphaba’s name.
