At a Trump campaign town hall in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in late October 2024, Elon Musk said, “I believe in the teachings of Christ.” He cited loving your neighbor, turning the other cheek and forgiveness. Futurism later reported skeptical and sarcastic responses from some users on Reddit’s r/Atheism—but those posts do not show that atheists broadly were appalled.
What did Elon Musk say about Christ’s teachings?
At the Harrisburg town hall, an attendee asked Musk what was keeping him from believing in God. Religion News Service reported that Musk answered, “I believe in the teachings of Christ.” He elaborated: “I believe in the Christian principles: Love thy neighbor, turn the other cheek — which is very important to have forgiveness. Because if you don’t have forgiveness, then you have an endless cycle of retribution.”
His answer was not an unqualified endorsement of pacifism. Musk said turning the other cheek applies when a person is already strong; a weaker person confronting a stronger predatory threat, he argued, could be killed. Religion News Service also reported that he then commented on the Middle East. The remarks are reported by a news outlet, not presented here as a reviewed primary transcript. Does that mean Musk identifies as Christian or believes in God?
The statement shows that Musk expressed belief in teachings he associated with Christ. By itself, it does not establish that he belongs to a Christian denomination or accepts every Christian doctrine.

The same town hall included a separate question asking whether Musk believed Jesus was a real person who was crucified, died, rose from the dead and is God. According to Religion News Service, Musk asked what “real person” meant and eventually answered that Jesus “is real,” then moved on without addressing all the theological claims in the question. That exchange does not settle what he believes about each claim. (Religion News Service, Dec. 3, 2024)
Religion News Service also reported that Musk called himself “probably a cultural Christian” in a July conversation with Jordan Peterson. That phrase is distinct from a full statement of Christian belief, and neither it nor his Harrisburg comments establish his private convictions or explain his motives. Were atheists appalled by the comments?
Futurism’s Nov. 5, 2024 article described displeasure, skepticism and sarcasm among some users posting in r/Atheism. It also reported commenters disputing the idea that Musk was an “atheist hero.” That supports a limited description of selected online reactions—not a claim about atheists as a group. The available reporting provides no representative survey or count of atheist opinion. (Futurism, Nov. 5, 2024)
Futurism also noted that it was unclear whether Musk had ever used the exact word “atheist” to describe his own beliefs. Calling him a former atheist as an established fact therefore goes beyond what that report supports. (Futurism, Nov. 5, 2024)
