We text a lot.” That is how Elon Musk reportedly described Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs during a conversation recounted in Character Limit: How Elon Musk Destroyed Twitter, by New York Times reporters Kate Conger and Ryan Mac. The anecdote is reported from the book, not from a transcript or recording cited in the coverage.
What Musk reportedly said
In the account, Musk first told Detavio Samuels, then CEO of Revolt, that “Puff is an investor in Twitter.” He followed that by describing Combs as “a good friend of mine” and saying, “We text a lot.” Noor Al-Sibai’s Futurism report attributes the exchange to Character Limit; Rolling Stone also recounts the reported wording in its coverage of people who backed Musk’s Twitter takeover.
Why Combs came up in the conversation
The reported exchange took place during the early Twitter takeover period. Samuels had raised concerns about racism and content on the platform, and Musk brought up Combs’s investor status and their reported personal connection in response. The coverage does not establish the precise date of the conversation.
What the shareholder records confirm
A court-unsealed X Holdings Corp. shareholder list included Sean Combs. The Information reported that the filing did not state how much any individual shareholder owned. It supports describing Combs as an investor associated with the acquisition, but it does not establish his investment amount or show that he financed or enabled Musk’s purchase of Twitter. The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press also covered the effort that led to disclosure of X Corp.’s investors.

What the anecdote does not establish
- It does not say when Musk and Combs first met.
- It does not establish how close their relationship was beyond Musk’s reported description and claim that they texted often.
- “Proud” is the Futurism headline’s characterization, not independently established evidence of Musk’s emotional state.
For the fuller account, the anecdote is attributed to Conger and Mac’s Character Limit: How Elon Musk Destroyed Twitter. The published reporting supports the quoted claim and Combs’s inclusion on the shareholder list, but leaves the relationship’s history and the size of Combs’s holding unresolved.
