Elon Musk endorsed Andrew Cuomo on X the day before New York City’s Nov. 4, 2025 mayoral election, arguing that a vote for Republican Curtis Sliwa would effectively help Zohran Mamdani. On Election Day, Musk then called the ballot a “scam” over its layout and repeated candidate names. Those repeated names reflected New York’s fusion-voting system, not duplicate candidates or a ballot irregularity. Mamdani won the election and was sworn in as mayor on Jan. 1, 2026.
What Musk posted before the election
On Nov. 3, 2025, Musk urged his X followers to vote for Cuomo and framed a vote for Sliwa as indirect support for Mamdani: “Remember to vote tomorrow in New York! Bear in mind that a vote for Curtis is really a vote for Mumdumi or whatever his name is. VOTE CUOMO!” Mediaite reported the post the day it appeared.
The post combined an explicit endorsement of Cuomo with an appeal to voters who might otherwise choose Sliwa. It was separate from Musk’s Election Day criticism of the ballot itself.
Why Musk called the ballot a “scam”
On Nov. 4, Musk posted a photograph of the ballot and wrote, “The New York City ballot form is a scam!” He pointed to the absence of a general ID requirement, the repeated names of mayoral candidates, and Cuomo’s position at the bottom right. He later argued that the layout would hurt Cuomo and help Mamdani, according to PolitiFact and Agence France-Presse.

Why Mamdani and Sliwa appeared more than once
The repeated names reflected New York’s fusion-voting system. A candidate can receive nominations from more than one party and appear on each party’s ballot line. Mamdani was nominated by the Democratic and Working Families parties; Sliwa was nominated by the Republican and Protect Animals parties. Voters select one line, and votes for the same candidate on different lines are counted toward that candidate’s total.
PolitiFact rated the claim that the repeated names made the ballot a scam false. Election-law expert Jerry H. Goldfeder told the outlet, “New York has had fusion voting for many, many years.”

What election officials said about the ballot layout
Kathleen McGrath, public information director for the New York State Board of Elections, told AFP by email on Nov. 4 that the ballot “represents the proper process and format as laid out in state election law.” AFP explained that recognized parties are ordered under rules tied to their nominees’ prior gubernatorial vote totals, with independent-party candidates placed below them under the applicable process. That framework explains the placement, rather than supporting Musk’s accusation that the form was a scam.

Mamdani defeated Cuomo and Sliwa. The Associated Press called the race at 9:34 p.m. EST on Nov. 4, 2025. The New York City Mayor’s Office identifies Mamdani as the city’s 112th mayor and records that he was sworn in on Jan. 1, 2026.
