Dustin Hoffman remembered Gene Hackman as “powerful, subtle, brilliant. A giant among actors.” In a tribute reported on February 28, 2025, Hoffman also recalled meeting Hackman as a young actor at the Pasadena Playhouse, where they played congas on the roof and admired Marlon Brando.
What did Dustin Hoffman say about Gene Hackman?
Hoffman’s tribute, relayed in a February 28, 2025 report, was both praise for Hackman’s talent and a memory of their early friendship:
“I met Gene in acting school, at the Pasadena Playhouse, when he was 27 and I was 19. We used to play congas together on the roof, trying to be like our hero Marlon Brando. And Gene was like Brando, in that he brought something unprecedented to our craft, something people didn’t immediately understand as genius: He was expelled from our school after three months for ‘not having talent.’ It was the first time they ever did that. He was that good. Powerful, subtle, brilliant. A giant among actors. I miss him already.”
The quotation is Hoffman’s recollection as reported by Yahoo News, republishing a Deadline report. Its school-expulsion detail should be understood as part of his remembered anecdote, not as an independently established fact. Yahoo News / Deadline, February 28, 2025

How did Hoffman know Hackman?
Hoffman said they met while studying acting at the Pasadena Playhouse: Hackman was 27 and Hoffman 19. His image of the two playing congas on the roof while trying to emulate Brando makes the tribute unusually personal. A 2002 Guardian interview also describes the men as classmates and friends and says both were dismissed from the school, offering earlier biographical context without independently confirming the specific “not having talent” story. The Guardian, January 26, 2002
Did Dustin Hoffman and Gene Hackman work together?
Yes. They co-starred in Runaway Jury (2003), adapted from John Grisham’s novel. The 2025 remembrance report describes it as their first onscreen collaboration, despite their long acquaintance. Yahoo News / Deadline, February 28, 2025

Why Hackman’s career gave the tribute weight
Hoffman’s comparison with Brando was an artistic judgment about Hackman’s originality, not a claim that their careers were identical. Hackman moved among leading and character roles over a career that included Bonnie and Clyde, The French Connection, The Conversation, Hoosiers, Unforgiven and The Royal Tenenbaums. The Associated Press obituary notes that he won the best-actor Academy Award for The French Connection; the Guardian’s 2002 interview provides period context on his range and discomfort with stardom.
