What Dragon Ball DAIMA Confirms About Dabura and the Demon Realm

DAIMA connects its Demon Realm setting to DBZ through Dabura, its established king—but that does not confirm DBZ villains came from another universe.

Dragon Ball DAIMA brings the Demon Realm into focus, giving new context to Dabura, the DBZ antagonist introduced as its king. But the official material cited here does not establish that DBZ villains generally came from “another universe,” or that the Demon Realm is another universe.

What DAIMA confirms about the Demon Realm

Toei Animation’s September 4, 2024 announcement says that DAIMA takes place in the “Demon Realm.” The announcement also credits Akira Toriyama with work on the series’ original concept, story, and character designs. It establishes the setting, but does not call the Demon Realm another universe. Toei Animation’s announcement

What Dabura’s DBZ history tells us

The official Dragon Ball profile identifies Dabura as the King of the Demon Realm. In the DBZ-era story, he serves as Babidi’s right-hand man under the wizard’s influence and helps orchestrate Majin Buu’s resurrection. The profile recounts that Dabura later turns against Buu, attempts to attack him, and is transformed into a cookie and eaten. It lists his first manga appearance as Tale 446. Official Dragon Ball profile: Dabura

This makes Dabura the direct continuity link between DBZ and DAIMA’s setting: DBZ identifies him as the Demon Realm’s king, while DAIMA is set in that realm. That supports a specific connection to Dabura, not a claim about every DBZ villain’s origin.

Do the new Majin characters prove the old villains came from another universe?

No. DAIMA’s official announcements give origins for two new characters, but those details do not establish a shared origin for DBZ antagonists:

  • Majin Kuu: The official site says Kuu was created in the First Demon World through the research of Dr. Arinsu and Great Witch Marba. Official announcement: Majin Kuu
  • Majin Duu: The official site says Duu was created using remaining Buu essence and Saibaiman seeds. This describes Duu’s creation; it does not say that Buu or other earlier villains originated in another universe. Official announcement: Majin Duu

Is the Demon Realm another universe?

The cited Toei announcement calls it the “Demon Realm,” and the official Dabura profile calls him its king. Those sources do not establish that “Demon Realm” and “another universe” mean the same thing. Without a specific statement equating the two, it is more accurate to keep the terms distinct.

What the DBZ flashback adds

Crunchyroll’s recap of DAIMA episode one describes an opening that revisits events from the Majin Buu saga, including Babidi and Dabura’s role in unleashing Buu. That recap is useful for episode context; the official Dragon Ball profile is the stronger source for Dabura’s biographical details. Crunchyroll’s episode-one recap

The accurate takeaway

DAIMA confirms that its story takes place in the Demon Realm, and official Dragon Ball material identifies Dabura as that realm’s king. The available sources do not confirm that DBZ villains as a group were from another universe, or that the Demon Realm is itself another universe.
