When did the exchange happen?
Swift and Kelce announced their engagement on Aug. 26, 2025, in a joint Instagram post. The Associated Press reported that the announcement included five photos and the caption, “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.” The AP’s report also said the exact time and location of the proposal were unclear at publication. TIME placed Trump’s comments at a Cabinet meeting a few hours after the engagement news broke. TIME’s account provides that context.
How did the remarks compare with Trump’s earlier comments about Swift?
The August remarks were complimentary, in contrast with Trump’s public criticism of Swift earlier that year. TIME reported that in May 2025 he posted on Truth Social, “Has anyone noticed that, since I said ‘I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT,’ she’s no longer ‘HOT?’” The contrast is documented; the exchange does not establish that Trump’s private views had changed or that he was endorsing either person.

What can be established about his reaction?
The recorded answer shows Trump wishing the couple luck and offering positive descriptions of both. It does not explain why he chose those words or reveal his private views. CNN’s transcript is a contemporaneous record, but because it is marked as subject to updates, consult the recording or another transcript if exact punctuation or final wording matters.
