YouTube’s RTMP backup server URL is a second destination where an encoder can send a live feed. It supports a redundant ingest setup: configure an encoder workflow to send the same content to both YouTube’s primary and backup ingestion addresses, then test whether the player rolls over when the primary feed stops. The URL alone does not create redundancy or guarantee an uninterrupted, seamless switch.
What the backup server URL is for
A server URL—also called an ingestion URL—is the network destination your encoder sends video to. In a standard RTMP setup, the encoder uses that address along with a separate stream key. YouTube provides primary and backup ingestion addresses; the backup is an alternate destination for a redundant feed.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API defines backupIngestionAddress as a backup ingestion URL. It says you may simultaneously send to it the content being sent to the primary ingestionAddress. This is an ingest address, not a viewer-facing playback URL, a second published watch page, or a second stream key.
How to use it in a redundant setup
- Get the values for the intended stream. Open that stream’s settings in YouTube Live Control Room, or obtain its ingestion values through the official API. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe entering the server URL and stream key in the encoder.
- Match the address to the protocol. For an RTMP workflow, use the RTMP address shown for that stream. For RTMPS, use the RTMPS address. Do not reuse a backup URL from a different stream or protocol.
- Configure redundant output. Set up an encoder or publishing workflow capable of sending the matching feed to both the primary and backup destinations. Simply replacing the primary address with the backup address gives you an alternate destination, but does not by itself arrange simultaneous redundancy or failover.
- Check the preview and stream health. Confirm that YouTube is receiving the expected feed before relying on the setup for a continuous broadcast.
- Rehearse the failure case. YouTube’s streaming tips say: “For test encoder failover, stop the primary encoder (or unplug its Ethernet cable) and make sure the player rolls over to the backup encoder.” Test with the actual encoder configuration and viewer player you intend to use.
Plan bandwidth and failure coverage
Sending two feeds consumes more upload capacity than sending one. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom and says to allow for the primary feed, backup feed, plus that margin. This is YouTube’s guidance, not a guarantee that a particular connection will remain stable. Check available upload capacity under the dual-feed load, rather than sizing only for the primary stream.

Redundancy also depends on what the two paths have in common. If both feeds rely on the same encoder, power supply, source, or internet connection, a failure in that shared component can affect both. The backup URL supplies another ingest destination; it does not supply independent equipment, power, source material, or network routes.
RTMP, RTMPS, and HLS addresses are not interchangeable
YouTube’s API lists primary and backup ingestion fields for RTMP, DASH, and HLS, as well as separate RTMPS fields. RTMPS is RTMP secured with TLS/SSL, and YouTube recommends it as a secure extension. Use the address associated with the protocol configured for your stream.

HLS has its own setup and backup address. YouTube’s HLS setup guidance says to select HLS as the stream protocol and copy the displayed Backup server URL when backup ingestion is needed. HLS sends video in segments rather than as a continuous RTMP stream, so YouTube says it has higher latency. An HLS backup address is not a substitute for the RTMP backup address in an RTMP configuration.
What the backup URL does—and does not—guarantee
- It does: identify an alternate YouTube destination for an encoder’s redundant feed.
- It can support: a workflow that sends the same content to primary and backup destinations and tests viewer-player rollover if the primary fails.
- It does not, on its own: configure a second encoder, duplicate the outgoing feed, detect every failure, or guarantee a particular switchover time or seamless playback. YouTube’s cited guidance calls for testing failover but does not promise a transition time.
