How to Preserve 4K 60fps Video Quality When Looping Files in OBS

Looping only repeats playback. Preserve 4K60 in OBS by checking the source, output resolution, FPS, encoder, and system performance.

To loop a 4K 60fps video in OBS without lowering its quality, enable Loop in the Media Source, keep the source at its native size, and set OBS’s output resolution to 3840×2160 and its frame rate to 60 FPS. These are separate controls: Loop repeats playback; it does not improve image quality. Smooth results also depend on whether your computer can decode, render, and record or stream the workload.

How to loop a video in OBS while keeping its quality

  1. Add the file: In your scene, add a Media Source and select the local video. OBS documentation lists formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM; available support can vary by OBS version, operating system, and installed codecs.
  2. Enable the repeat: Open the Media Source properties and check Loop. OBS then plays the file again after playback completes. Restart playback when source becomes active controls whether playback starts over when the source becomes visible; OBS lists it as enabled by default. Show nothing when playback ends matters if playback ends, such as when Loop is off.
  3. Test hardware decoding if available: The optional Use hardware decoding when available setting lets the GPU decode supported file types. OBS lists it as off by default. It is not a resolution or fidelity control, and it will not restore detail missing from the file.
  4. Check the source itself: Confirm the file’s actual resolution and frame rate. A 4K 60fps label or export setting does not establish that every frame contains unique 60fps motion or that the source has genuine 4K detail.

If you use a VLC Video Source for a playlist rather than a single Media Source file, looping is controlled separately with Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed, and the 64-bit OBS build requires 64-bit VLC.

Set OBS’s canvas, output resolution, and frame rate

Open Settings → Video. The Base (Canvas) Resolution is the space in which you compose the scene; Output (Scaled) Resolution is the resolution OBS delivers. To deliver genuine 4K, set the output to 3840×2160 and avoid scaling it down. The base canvas should suit your scene composition and source dimensions. Enlarging a smaller source to fill a 4K canvas cannot add detail it does not contain.

Set Common FPS Value to 60 when you want 60fps output. OBS cautions that “60-fps streaming can be very taxing on your system compared to 30-fps.” Setting output to 60 does not turn lower-frame-rate footage into native 60fps motion; check the source frame rate and watch for repeated frames or uneven motion.

Choose recording quality, encoder, and file format

For local recording, OBS’s simple quality options involve trade-offs rather than a single universally best choice:

OBS preset What it means Trade-off
Same as stream Reuses the stream encoder settings Recording quality follows those settings.
High Quality Targets high quality with medium file size A middle ground for quality and storage.
Indistinguishable Targets visually indistinguishable output Creates larger files and may affect weaker or older hardware.
Lossless Uses the CPU encoder Creates extremely large files and can raise system demands. OBS Project’s 2023 guide estimates about 7 GB per minute; actual size varies by system and encoding conditions.

For encoder-specific controls, OBS lists baseline quality ranges of NVENC constant QP 16–23, x264 CRF 16–23, AMD CQP 16–23, and Quick Sync ICQ 16–23. In these controls, lower values mean higher quality and larger files. Treat the ranges as OBS guidance, not guaranteed optimal settings for every 4K60 workload.

For local recording, OBS recommends using the best quality hardware encoder available on a compatible system. Its format guidance describes AV1, HEVC, and H.264 as a trade-off: AV1 can improve quality per file size over HEVC but has weaker editing-software support in that guide; HEVC can offer better quality at a given bitrate or file size than H.264, with more restrictive licensing and less web-streaming support; H.264 is widely compatible. Verify that your device and intended editor or playback destination support the codec you choose.

The container is separate from the video codec and does not enhance image detail. OBS calls MKV its default and recommends it for most use cases because it is resilient if recording is interrupted and can be remuxed when needed; some editing software has weaker MKV support. Fragmented MP4 or MOV may suit direct uploading or common editing software while seeking resilience. Avoid conventional MP4 or MOV for direct recording when recoverability after interruption is important.

Check the recording, not just the preview

  1. Record a short sample using the scene, source, encoder, and settings you plan to use.
  2. Inspect the saved file’s resolution and frame rate, then play it back and check detail, motion, and audio.
  3. If motion stutters, compare local playback and recording separately before changing quality settings. Review the OBS log for clues about the bottleneck.
  4. Check CPU and GPU load, media decoding, scene rendering, and encoding. A hardware encoder or decoder may help when supported, but neither is a universal fix.

An OBS preview alone does not prove the saved file is 4K60 or that its motion is smooth. A short test can reveal whether the problem is in the source, playback, recording, or delivery.

Troubleshoot common 4K60 looping problems

The clip does not repeat

  • Open the Media Source properties and check Loop.
  • If using a VLC Video Source playlist, check Loop Playlist, confirm VLC is installed, and match VLC’s 32-bit or 64-bit build to OBS.

The output looks soft or is not actually 4K

  • Verify that the source file itself is 4K and that Output (Scaled) Resolution is 3840Ă—2160.
  • Check the source transform and scene layout: scaling a smaller source up does not restore absent detail, while scaling the output down means the delivered file is not 4K.
  • Inspect the recording’s properties. Do not treat Loop or hardware decoding as image-enhancement settings.

Motion looks uneven or frames repeat

  • Compare the source frame rate with Common FPS Value in Settings → Video.
  • Test the source’s playback and the saved recording separately. A 60fps OBS setting cannot create unique frames that are not in the source.
  • Check system load and whether decoding, rendering, or encoding is struggling.

Playback or recording stutters

  • Use a short test and inspect the OBS log; check CPU/GPU load and distinguish decoding, rendering, and encoding limits.
  • Consider a supported hardware decoder or encoder if the relevant stage is overloaded. High-quality and lossless recordings can increase file size and performance demands.
  • Lowering output resolution, frame rate, or recording quality can reduce load, but each changes the result. Change one setting at a time and retest.

OBS reports dropped frames while streaming

An increasing dropped-frames counter indicates a connection to the streaming service that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate, according to OBS. That is a network-delivery problem, not the same as a local file failing to loop, decode, or render smoothly. Diagnose those symptoms separately.

Colors or contrast look wrong

Media Source includes a YUV Color Range control, listed as Partial by default in OBS’s guide. Match the setting to the source and workflow; setting Full indiscriminately can make the result look wrong.
