UwU does not usually stand for a phrase. It is a text emoticon that looks like a cute face: the “u” characters suggest eyes and the “w” a small mouth. People use it in informal messages to convey cuteness, warmth, happiness, or affection.
What does UwU mean?
UwU is read visually, not as initials. Its shape suggests a face, and it can add a cute, warm, happy, or affectionate tone to a casual message. Dictionary.com defines it as “an emoticon depicting a cute face,” while Cambridge describes it as a text emoticon resembling a face someone might make in response to something very cute.
For example, someone might add “uwu” to a friendly message to make it sound playfully soft or affectionate. The exact tone depends on the surrounding words and the community using it; there is no single interpretation for every context.
How is UwU different from OwO?
OwO is a related emoticon, but it is more commonly associated with surprise or excitement. The “o” characters suggest open eyes, while the “u” characters in UwU suggest closed or smiling eyes. These are informal visual conventions, not fixed rules.

Where did UwU come from?
The exact origin is uncertain. Dictionary.com points to an English-language anime and manga fan-fiction site where an early online example appeared by 2005, while noting that the form may have been used earlier in East Asian digital communication. That account is not a proven first-use date.
Dictionary.com also connects UwU and OwO with kaomoji and describes them spreading online in the late 2000s as social media and East Asian popular culture became more popular in the West. The expression received wider mainstream attention after actor Mark Hamill posted UwU in a tweet in March 2018 following a fan request; that was a moment of visibility, not its beginning.
