In theater seating, a loge is a small, separate seating area. Depending on the venue, it may mean a box beside or above the stage, or the front part of the lowest balcony. Check the theater’s seating map before assuming where a ticket is located.
What does loge mean in a theater?
American English uses loge for either a theater or opera-house box, or the front section of the lowest balcony, separated from the rest by an aisle or railing. Cambridge likewise defines it as a small separate seating area that may be above and to the side of the stage or at the front of the lowest balcony. Dictionary.com and Cambridge Dictionary describe these related uses.
The word’s meaning is not a dependable seat-location code across all theaters. A USITT venue terminology guide lists “loge” as a synonym for “balcony,” but individual venues may use section names differently. USITT’s venue terminology guide illustrates that the terms can overlap; it does not mean every theater treats them as interchangeable.
Is loge the same as balcony or box seating?
Not necessarily. A loge can refer to a box around the auditorium, or to an open section at the front of a balcony. The useful distinction is the layout shown by the venue, not the label alone.

For a French-language definition, the Académie française’s ninth-edition dictionary describes auditorium loges as compartments around the perimeter of a performance hall, each containing several seats and separated by partitions. The same entry also gives a distinct French meaning: an actor’s or artist’s dressing room. That dressing-room sense is not the usual meaning of loge on an English-language theater ticket. How to tell where your loge ticket is
- Open the specific theater’s seating map. Find the section labeled “loge” and check whether it is a box, a balcony area, or another venue-defined section.
- Match the section to your ticket. Confirm the section name and seat or row information against the map rather than inferring location from the word alone.
- Ask the box office if the map is unclear. Ask where the section is and whether the seat has any sightline or access details you should know. The term itself does not establish view quality, privacy, amenities, or price.
How do you pronounce loge?
Cambridge gives the US pronunciation as /loʊʒ/ and the UK pronunciation as /ləʊʒ/. Cambridge Dictionary.
