Joe Biden’s middle name, Robinette, is a family name shared with his father. Surname references trace it through French forms related to Robinet and Robin to Robert; one source connects Robert’s older roots with “illustrious” and “famous.” That is an account of the surname’s possible etymology—not a confirmed personal meaning or the documented reason Biden’s family chose the name.
What is Joe Biden’s full name?
The Joseph R. Biden Jr. Presidential Library identifies the former president as Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. and his father as Joseph Robinette Biden Sr. The repeated name establishes a family connection, but the library does not say who selected it or what they intended it to mean. The Biden Library’s biography provides both names.

Where does the surname Robinette come from?
Surname references give related but not identical pathways. La Revue française de Généalogie describes Robinette as a diminutive variant associated with Robinet and Robin, and connects Robert to the Germanic elements hrod, meaning “illustrious,” and berht, meaning “famous.” Its Robinette entry therefore supports that gloss as an etymology of older roots, not as a certain literal translation of Biden’s middle name.
FamilySearch, citing the Dictionary of American Family Names, says Robinette may be an altered form of English Robinett or French Robinet. It also notes a pronunciation of the final t in some North American French usage. FamilySearch’s surname entry reflects the name’s variant pathways, so a single definitive derivation should not be assumed.

What has Biden said about the name?
In an official 2023 transcript, Biden confirmed, “Then I found out—my sister and I found out the name Robinette—Robinette, my middle name is Robinette.” He also speculated about a French or Huguenot connection, while saying the history was confusing to him. His remarks establish his own uncertainty; they do not prove a particular origin for the family name. The passage appears in the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s transcript of 2023 remarks.

What can—and can’t—be concluded about its meaning?
- Established: Robinette is Biden’s middle name, and his father also bore it as a middle name.
- Supported as surname etymology: References connect Robinette with Robin or Robinet and, in turn, Robert; one traces Robert to roots glossed as “illustrious” and “famous.”
- Not established: The sources do not document the precise origin of the Bidens’ family name, why it was chosen, or a literal personal meaning such as “bright fame.” Biden’s possible French or Huguenot family-history link remains a speculation in his account.
