“Chikhai bardo” means the bardo, or intermediate state, of the moment of death in Tibetan Buddhist accounts of the six bardos. In Severance, it is the title of season 2, episode 7. The term’s association with dying and transition offers a plausible way to read the episode’s themes of identity and memory, but the available sources do not confirm that this was the creators’ intended meaning.
What does “Chikhai Bardo” mean?
“Bardo” is a Tibetan Buddhist term for an intermediate or transitional state. “Chikhai bardo” is commonly rendered as “the bardo of the moment of death” or “the bardo of dying.” In an overview of the six bardos, this phase begins with the dying process and continues through the dissolution of the elements until the external and internal breath have ended. The next bardo begins after the final inner breath. Lion’s Roar’s overview of bardo describes this framework.

That distinction matters: Chikhai bardo is not simply a general word for the afterlife. In this account, it refers specifically to dying; later bardos concern experiences after death and the process of becoming or rebirth.
Where does it sit in the six-bardo framework?
The overview describes six traditional bardos: life, dreaming, meditation, the moment of death, reality or luminosity, and becoming or rebirth. TIME also describes Chikhai bardo as the fourth of six stages in a life-death-rebirth cycle, spanning from the first signs of death to the final breath. TIME’s episode analysis uses that framing.

Spoilers: TIME reports that Gemma and Mark discuss a card image that appears to depict Chikhai bardo. Gemma describes the image as “the same guy fighting himself, defeating his own psyche. Ego death.” In the context of the episode, a reference associated with dying can resonate with questions of identity, memory, and Gemma’s relationship with Mark. That is a thematic interpretation, not a confirmed explanation from the show’s creators.
