IYKYK means “if you know, you know.” It’s a written shorthand for pointing to an inside joke, shared experience, or reference that some readers will recognize without an explanation. In a text or post, it can sound playful and knowing—but people outside that context may not understand what you mean.
What does IYKYK stand for?
The letters stand for “if you know, you know.” Cambridge Dictionary defines it as a written abbreviation used in texts and social media to indicate shared knowledge or a shared joke that other people might not understand. Cambridge Dictionary’s definition and Dictionary.com’s slang entry describe the same basic use.
How do you use IYKYK?
Put IYKYK after a remark or alongside a post when you expect some of your audience to recognize the reference. For example: “That tiny café still makes the best cinnamon rolls—iykyk.” The line works if the intended readers share the memory or local knowledge; without that context, the abbreviation does not explain why the café matters.
It can also appear as the hashtag #iykyk. Both uppercase “IYKYK” and lowercase “iykyk” are used, and the hashtag is commonly lowercase. People may read the letters aloud as the full phrase.

IYKYK signals that a reference is meant for people who share particular knowledge or experience. Depending on the situation, that can feel like a friendly nod to an in-group or leave others feeling outside the joke. If everyone needs to understand the point, explain the reference instead of relying on IYKYK.
Where did IYKYK come from?
The exact origin is not established by the available dictionary accounts. Dictionary.com’s entry, dated November 7, 2022, says the abbreviation appeared on social media by at least 2009 and cites an August 13, 2009 post reading “deeper than atlantis (iykyk),” attributed to NT (@NathanOnly). That is an early documented example, not proof of who coined the expression or when it first began.
