Panromantic describes someone who may feel romantic attraction to people regardless of gender, or for whom gender is not a determining factor in romantic attraction. It does not mean being attracted to everyone. Romantic orientation and sexual orientation are distinct, so a person can be panromantic without being pansexual.

What panromantic means

The Trevor Project describes panromantic people as experiencing romantic attraction to some people regardless of gender. LGBT HERO similarly explains that gender is not a factor in that attraction. The wording varies: PFLAG describes attraction to all genders and notes that gender may do little to define the relationship. These are ways people describe an orientation, not a checklist someone must meet.

“Regardless of gender” does not mean a panromantic person is attracted to every person or every gender in the same way. People still have individual preferences, and attraction is not universal availability or consent.

Romantic attraction and sexual attraction are different

Romantic orientation describes the pattern of a person’s romantic attraction; sexual orientation describes sexual attraction. They may align, but they do not have to. For example, someone can be asexual and panromantic: they may experience little or no sexual attraction while experiencing romantic attraction regardless of gender.

Term What it describes
Panromantic Romantic attraction that may occur regardless of gender, or where gender is not a determining factor.
Pansexual Sexual attraction regardless of gender.

These terms describe different kinds of attraction, so being panromantic does not by itself mean someone is pansexual. Childline and LGBT HERO also distinguish romantic orientation from sexual orientation.

How it differs from related labels

Panromantic and biromantic

People may use panromantic and biromantic to describe experiences that overlap, but individuals choose the label that fits them. The Trevor Project notes that some people use bisexual and pansexual interchangeably, while others use the terms to convey different experiences of gender in attraction. These labels should not be treated as a ranking or as rigid definitions that override a person’s own wording.

Panromantic and polyamory

Panromantic is about the genders of people someone may feel romantic attraction toward. Polyamory concerns consensual relationships with more than one partner. One describes a pattern of attraction; the other describes a relationship arrangement. Neither term implies the other.

What the label does—and does not—say about relationships

A person’s orientation does not reliably predict their behavior or relationship history. Someone’s current partner, or the genders of people they have dated before, cannot establish their orientation. UNC-Chapel Hill’s LGBTQ+ terminology manual distinguishes identity, attraction, and behavior, and recommends asking people how they identify rather than making assumptions.

A panromantic person may be in a relationship that others read as straight; that does not erase the person’s identity. The Trevor Project’s guide includes an anonymous participant comment to that effect. As with any identity, the person is the authority on the label they use.

How to talk about someone’s orientation

  • Use the terms a person uses for themself.
  • Do not infer their orientation from a partner, dating history, or appearance.
  • If the information is relevant and you are unsure, ask respectfully how they identify; do not press for details they have not chosen to share.
  • Remember that attraction does not imply consent or interest in any particular person.

Panromantic is an identity term, not a diagnosis. People use labels to communicate their own experiences, and not everyone will define a label in exactly the same way.
