Her formal role is to support the monarch through public engagements, charitable work and ceremonial duties. The King and the Royal Family have no executive or political role in the UK’s constitutional system.
Where the “reins of power” phrase comes from
An AOL republication of Rachel Burchfield’s InStyle article on May 6, 2025, used the phrase in its headline and attributed it to a royal biographer. The available text does not name that biographer. It frames Catherine’s influence around parenting with Prince William and the couple’s family priorities, and includes claims from unnamed sources about family decisions and behind-the-scenes influence. Those are reported claims, not independently established facts.
The phrase is therefore best understood as journalistic shorthand for perceived influence. It does not establish that Catherine holds formal governing authority, nor does the available attribution support treating the wording as a verified quotation from an identified person.
What Catherine’s official role includes
Catherine became a member of the Royal Family when she married Prince William in 2011. The Royal Family says she carries out duties in support of the monarch through engagements in the UK and overseas, and pursues charitable causes and patronages.

Public and charitable work
Her public responsibilities include regular engagements and work connected with her charitable causes and patronages. These activities give her a visible platform, but visibility and advocacy are not the same as executive authority.
Ceremonial and representational duties
The Royal Family’s description of royal duties includes annual events such as Garden Parties and Trooping the Colour, welcoming heads of state on state visits, and taking part in Remembrance ceremonies. Overseas visits may be made on behalf of the monarch or, at the government’s request, to represent Britain. These are public and ceremonial responsibilities carried out in support of the monarch.
Does Kate Middleton have political power?
No—not in the formal sense of directing government or making laws. Wales.com, a Welsh Government site, describes the UK as a constitutional monarchy and says the King and his family have no executive or political role. Legislative authority rests with elected representatives in the Senedd and UK Parliament.
That distinction leaves room for a senior royal to be prominent, to advocate for causes and potentially to exert informal influence in personal or institutional settings. But public duties do not prove a particular level of private influence, and the phrase “reins of power” should not be read as a claim that the Princess of Wales can govern.

What can—and cannot—be concluded about her influence
- Documented: Catherine supports the monarch through public engagements, charitable work, patronages and ceremonial duties.
- Reported, not established here: The 2025 article relays unnamed-source claims about private family decisions and behind-the-scenes influence.
- Not demonstrated: The available sources do not establish a ranking of Catherine’s private influence among members of the Royal Family or show that she exercises constitutional power.
For a documentary-minded reader, the key is to separate observable duties from claims about private relationships. The former are described by the Royal Family; the latter require clear attribution and independent corroboration before they can be treated as fact.
