A sales vice president at a media company leads the people and plans responsible for bringing in advertising revenue. The role commonly spans revenue strategy, sales targets, team leadership, advertiser relationships, forecasting, and coordination with the departments that package and deliver campaigns. Its day-to-day focus depends on what the company sells: local television inventory, audio and radio, cross-platform campaigns, connected-TV advertising, or podcast partnerships.

There is no single standard job description. A vice president may oversee sales leaders across many markets, manage a regional team, or lead a specialized monetization function. To understand a particular position, look beyond the title at the media products, territory, revenue model, reporting scope, and operational responsibilities attached to it.

What the role is accountable for

The central responsibility is commercial performance: turning a company’s audience, programming, platforms, and advertiser relationships into revenue. A VP translates business priorities into a sales plan, sets or executes targets, and holds the relevant managers and teams accountable for results. At a multi-market broadcaster, that can mean coordinating performance across markets and platforms; in a specialized digital role, it may mean building a monetization strategy around specific ad products and sales channels.

The VP usually leads through other people rather than personally handling every transaction. The team may include sales managers, account executives, digital specialists, or leaders responsible for particular markets or platforms. Even so, senior leaders often remain involved in important advertiser relationships, high-value opportunities, negotiations, and decisions about how to package the company’s offerings.

In practical terms, the job combines setting direction with checking whether execution is working. A plan is not complete when targets are announced: leadership also needs to review performance, identify gaps, determine what is causing them, and decide what action the team should take.

Core responsibilities

Set targets and turn strategy into a sales plan

A VP establishes or carries out a sales strategy and translates it into goals that managers and teams can act on. Targets may be organized by market, product, platform, or account, depending on the company’s structure. The leader then monitors performance against those goals and adjusts execution when results fall short or conditions change.

For example, TEGNA’s posting describes responsibility across markets and platforms, including monthly reporting, forecast accuracy, analysis against goals, and corrective action plans. That is an example of the remit in one employer’s multi-market broadcast organization, not a universal reporting calendar or required structure.

Lead, coach, and develop the sales organization

Sales leadership includes setting expectations, coaching managers and account executives, recruiting talent, and helping people improve their commercial execution. Some roles call for field coaching and training; larger organizations may also emphasize developing future leaders and planning for succession. The balance depends on how many layers of management sit between the VP and the people selling to advertisers.

  • No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
  • Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.

A VP’s impact is therefore not measured only by personal selling ability. The leader must build a team that can understand client needs, present suitable solutions, manage accounts, and follow through reliably. When the organization has several markets or product groups, consistent standards and effective local leadership become part of the job.

Win advertisers and grow existing accounts

The VP supports new-business development, maintains senior relationships with important clients, and helps the organization find ways to expand existing business. This can mean connecting an advertiser’s objectives with a mix of media products rather than selling a single placement in isolation. A multi-platform company, for instance, may combine linear television, digital, audio, social, or streaming offerings when those products fit the client’s needs.

The VP may personally join important meetings or negotiations, while account executives and other sellers manage many day-to-day relationships. The extent of direct selling is not fixed by the title: it depends on the company’s scale, account structure, deal complexity, and the VP’s specific remit.

Manage forecasts, inventory, pricing, and commercial performance

Many sales VPs oversee forecasts and budgets or are accountable for the quality of the information used to plan revenue. Depending on the business, their remit may also include ad inventory, pricing, packaging, yield, and demand quality. These responsibilities matter because selling more campaigns is not automatically the same as improving the commercial outcome: the company also needs to understand what it can sell, how offers are structured, and how effectively available inventory is monetized.

The operational emphasis differs by media model. A broadcast-focused leader may concentrate on sales performance across markets and platforms. A connected-TV monetization leader may be more directly involved in pricing, packaging, partners, yield, measurement, and operating plans. Those differences affect which data the VP reviews and which colleagues they need to involve.

Coordinate with teams that support the sale and delivery

Advertising depends on more than the sales conversation. The VP works with relevant partners so that an offer can be priced, approved, scheduled, produced, measured, and delivered. Depending on the company, those partners can include digital sales, marketing, finance, revenue operations, product and ad operations, legal, production, traffic, research, and measurement teams.

Not every VP works with every function listed here. A radio organization may have a particular need to coordinate with station operations, traffic, marketing, and production; a streaming monetization role may require closer involvement with ad technology, product, measurement, and commercial partners. The underlying task is to align what the team sells with what the business can deliver.

How the work changes across media businesses

“Media company” covers distinct businesses with different inventory, audiences, buyers, and sales mechanics. The examples below come from employer job descriptions and show how a VP-level role can vary; they are not formal definitions for every company in each category.

Media context Emphasis described in employer postings
Multi-market television broadcaster Lead local sales leaders; grow revenue across linear, streaming, and digital; use forecasts and market insight; and support consistent execution across markets.
Audio and radio Manage account executives and station revenue; oversee inventory and expenses; coach in the field; and coordinate with marketing, production, traffic, and sales operations.
Regional multimedia organization Lead television, radio, and digital teams; sell across linear, audio, digital, social, and streaming or OTT; and deliver quarterly and annual targets.
Connected-TV monetization Develop monetization strategy across programmatic, sponsorship, and selected direct channels; manage pricing, packaging, partners, yield, measurement, and operating plans.
Podcast and talent business Create brand partnerships and ad products, connect talent with advertisers, lead sales marketing, and work with editorial, talent, and business operations.

These distinctions help explain why two jobs with “vice president” and “sales” in the title can look quite different. One may be primarily a people-leadership and market-performance role; another may place more weight on ad products, partnerships, or monetization operations. The company’s medium is only one clue: the scale of the territory, level of team leadership, and mix of revenue channels also shape the work.

How performance is measured

There is no single scorecard established for every media sales VP. Employer postings point to a combination of financial results, sales execution, and the health of the business behind those results. A particular employer may give some measures much more weight than others.

  • Revenue and target attainment: growth, sales targets, and performance against goals.
  • Forecasting and planning: forecast accuracy and execution of the sales plan.
  • Business development and accounts: new business, client retention, pipeline, bookings, and account expansion, where those measures apply.
  • Monetization effectiveness: inventory yield and quality of demand, particularly in roles with explicit inventory or yield responsibilities.

The relevant mix follows the sales model. A local broadcast organization may focus on market and platform performance; a podcast partnership team may emphasize brand relationships and ad products; a CTV monetization function may pay close attention to channel mix, yield, pricing, and measurement. When comparing jobs, use the employer’s stated responsibilities and measures rather than assuming that one metric defines all VP roles.

Skills and experience employers may seek

Postings reviewed for these roles commonly call for leadership experience in sales, a record of growing revenue, coaching ability, advertiser relationship development, negotiation, comfort with data and forecasts, and collaboration across departments. Familiarity with a media market or with the relevant advertising model can also matter. The exact combination depends on whether the job centers on broadcast sales, digital advertising, streaming monetization, or partnerships.

Qualifications in individual postings illustrate the variation. TEGNA’s posting asks for a bachelor’s degree and 10 or more years in advertising sales and sales leadership. Lionsgate’s monetization posting asks for 10 or more years in CTV or digital advertising, streaming, ad tech, or monetization, as well as 6 or more years leading cross-functional initiatives and/or teams. These are employer-specific examples, not universal entry requirements for a sales vice president.

What job titles can—and cannot—tell you

Related titles include VP, Ad Sales; Vice President of Sales; Regional VP, Multimedia Sales; and VP, Monetization (Advertising & Partnerships). These titles can signal comparable seniority but do not establish identical duties. “Regional” may point to geographic scope, “Ad Sales” to advertising revenue, and “Monetization” to a wider remit involving how inventory, channels, partnerships, and ad products generate revenue. The job description—not the title alone—shows which interpretation applies.

When evaluating a role, check six dimensions:

  • Medium and inventory: broadcast, audio, digital, connected TV, podcasts, or a mix.
  • Geography and scale: a single market, a region, multiple markets, or a broader portfolio.
  • People leadership: whether the VP leads individual contributors, managers, regional leaders, or several layers.
  • Revenue model: direct sales, sponsorship, programmatic, partnerships, or a combination.
  • Operating remit: forecasting and inventory management versus monetization technology, yield, or measurement responsibilities.
  • Personal deal involvement: how much the VP handles key relationships and negotiations directly versus leading the team that does so.

Pay and company figures need context

Salary figures in postings describe particular jobs, not a reliable market-wide typical salary. TEGNA listed a range of $230,000–$300,000 USD for its specific VP, Ad Sales posting; Lionsgate listed $200,000–$250,000 for its specific VP, Monetization posting; and Vox Media Group listed $175,000–$250,000 USD for its specific VP, Head of Podcast Go-To-Market posting. The year was not stated on the accessed postings. These figures should not be treated as directly comparable without knowing each employer’s compensation terms, location, and other applicable details.

Company scale can also help explain a job’s scope, but should not be mistaken for an industry-wide statistic. TEGNA’s posting described a footprint of 64 television stations in 51 U.S. markets and more than 100 million people reached monthly across web, mobile apps, streaming, and linear television. That was company-provided context in the posting; it does not describe the reach of media companies generally.

In practice: a leadership role shaped by the business

A sales vice president’s work is to connect a media company’s commercial goals with the team, products, and processes needed to reach them. That can involve setting targets and coaching sellers, but it can also extend into forecasting, inventory and yield, pricing, partnerships, and campaign delivery. The clearest way to understand any one role is to identify what it sells, where it sells it, who reports into it, and which outcomes the employer expects it to own.
