It is usually a deliberately absurd response or a way to show you recognize the joke—not a code with one fixed translation. The phrase is associated with Philadelphia rapper Skrilla’s song “Doot Doot (6 7),” but the song lyric and the later meme are not the same thing.
What does “6-7” mean?
In current meme usage, “6-7” can be a playful answer that does not actually answer a question, a reaction when someone encounters the digits together, or simply a signal that the speaker is in on the joke. It is also written “67” or “6 7” and pronounced as two separate numbers: “six seven.”
Dictionary.com describes the slang use as “largely nonsensical” and “playfully absurd.” Some people use it to mean “so-so,” but that is one reported use, not a reliable translation. If a child says it, the most accurate response may be that they are repeating a shared joke rather than conveying a specific fact.
Where did the phrase come from?
The phrase is associated with Philadelphia rapper Skrilla’s song “Doot Doot (6 7).” The lyric’s exact intended meaning has attracted different explanations, but those theories should not be treated as settled fact. WHYY reported Skrilla describing the meaning as fluid: “That’s just what my brain thought of when I was making the song … It means a block … but that’s not what it means to everybody else now. So it’s just like, turn something negative to something positive.”

That comment is about the song and its evolution; it does not establish a universal meaning for children using the phrase later. The meme’s social use can be nonsensical even when a lyric has a particular personal or contextual meaning.
How did “6-7” become a kids’ meme?
Dictionary.com says TikTok and Instagram clips paired the song with basketball footage as early as October 2024. Basketball edits helped the number travel: NBA player LaMelo Ball is 6 feet 7 inches tall, making the phrase an easy fit for videos featuring him. A youth basketball clip featuring the boy later nicknamed “67 Kid,” as well as basketball player Taylen “TK” Kinney’s participation, helped amplify it.

Dictionary.com’s 2025 Word of the Year press release reported that “67” appeared in digital media six times more frequently in October 2025 than its average usage in 2024. That is the organization’s comparison of digital-media usage, not a count of children saying it or a measure of how common it is now.
Why do kids find it funny?
Part of the appeal is that the phrase can be repeated without requiring a precise definition. A shared, deliberately unclear joke can signal belonging: you recognize the reference, even if there is no literal message to decode.

Media scholars Rebekah Willett, Amanda Levido, and Hyeon-Seon Jeong compare the craze with older forms of children’s peer culture, including secret languages, hand signs, playground games, and nonsense phrases. They argue that such play can give children a pocket of agency in adult-directed routines, while the joke’s opacity can strengthen a sense of belonging among peers. That is their interpretation of the phenomenon, not proof that every child who says “6-7” has the same motive.
Why won’t kids stop saying it—and is it still popular?
Repetition is part of how a running joke works, and the phrase can be funny to a group precisely because it is unexpected or confusing to adults. But its popularity has changed over time. The scholars’ January 2026 commentary described the fad as appearing to fade after reaching homes, schools, sports events, and public settings. In January 2026, the Associated Press reported that “6-7” had been included in Lake Superior State University’s annual Banished Words List; university president David Travis predicted it would be gone the following year. That was a prediction, not a verified outcome.

These dated reports do not establish how prevalent the phrase is in October 2026. The available sources provide no current 2026 count of how many children use it.

It sometimes did. In October 2025, the Los Angeles Times reported that repeated shouts disrupted lessons at some schools and that teachers or administrators responded in different ways, including bans or discipline. At one California school, principal Carlos Ochoa described teachers letting students have a moment to shout the phrase or joining in to make it less disruptive. These are examples from particular schools, not evidence of a uniform policy or a problem in every classroom.

For an adult trying to respond, it can help to separate the phrase’s social function from its effect on the room. A teacher or parent can acknowledge that it is a joke without allowing repeated shouting to interrupt a lesson or conversation.
