What they eat can depend on the season: some accounts describe rice or a negotiated rice supply, while others describe gathered food such as fruit, coconut water and earthworms. Food rewards also enter the picture, so one contestant’s experience is not a reliable menu for every season.
What food is available at camp?
Reported examples point to a mix of provisions, food found in the environment and food earned through the game. The balance varies by season, and the available accounts do not amount to a complete log of what every contestant eats.
Rice is not guaranteed
Scot Pollard, who competed on Survivor: Kaôh Rōng in 2016, said, “Jeff [Probst] didn’t give us rice this year.” A much later example shows a different arrangement: a 2025 CBS episode description says contestants negotiated with host Jeff Probst for rice. Those examples establish that rice provisions can differ; they do not describe every season in between or establish a permanent rule. Pollard’s account; CBS’s 2025 episode description.
Food gathered or caught
Pollard also recalled that his tribe ate fruit taken from a boat and drank coconut water before they had a fire and could boil water. Genie Chen, describing her experience on Survivor 41, discussed eating earthworms and fishing. These are accounts from particular contestants and circumstances—not evidence that every tribe has access to the same foods. Pollard’s account; Chen’s account.

How have provisions changed across seasons?
In a 2002 CBS News report about Survivor: The Australian Outback, host Jeff Probst described that season this way: “The biggest change for this Survivor is, we’re not giving them any food, we’re not giving them any water, we’re not giving them any fire.” That is a statement about the season being discussed at the time, not a current, all-seasons production policy. CBS News, 2002.
Read season-specific descriptions as snapshots rather than a universal set of camp rules. A historical account of no food, water or fire from production cannot establish what contestants receive in later seasons; likewise, a later rice negotiation does not show that rice is routinely supplied to every tribe.

Do contestants get food through rewards?
Yes, food can also come through game rewards or negotiations, rather than routine camp provisions. CBS’s 2025 episode description specifically mentions rice negotiated with Probst. The sources cited here do not establish what every reward meal contains, so it would be misleading to treat one reward or negotiation as a standard menu. CBS’s 2025 episode description.

Food scarcity can be physically difficult, but the reported weight-loss figure here is specific to two people, not a typical outcome. In a 2014 CBS News report about Survivor: San Juan del Sur, contestants Josh Canfield and Reed Kelly said they each lost 20 pounds during the competition. That figure should not be generalized to other contestants or seasons. CBS News, 2014.
