In Bengali folklore, Petni and Shakchunni are both associated with fish, though stories disagree about how it is prepared. Brahmadaitya are described in some accounts as eating only food considered religiously clean. Ordinary bhuts, by contrast, are recorded eating rice and other human foods, with fish a favorite. These are reported traditions and story variants, not a single fixed menu shared by every Bengali community.
What does a Petni eat?
Some stories describe a Petni asking people carrying fish home from the market to share it. In these tellings, refusal may turn the request threatening. A 2022 Scroll feature interprets the craving in connection with desires denied to women in life, including historical restrictions on widows’ access to fish. That is the feature’s reading of the folklore, not an explanation established for every Petni story.
What does a Shakchunni eat?
Shakchunni, often described in the cited accounts as the ghost of a married woman, is also associated with fish. The Scroll feature connects this appetite with longing for married life and its symbolism. Again, this is an interpretation attached to particular tellings, rather than a universal rule for the figure.
Stories disagree about how the fish is prepared
Accounts reported by Scroll vary: the fish may be raw, charred, fried or rancid. No one preparation can be treated as canonical on the available evidence. The variation is part of the folklore, not a contradiction that needs to be resolved into one recipe.

What does a Brahmadaitya eat?
Some contemporary accounts distinguish Brahmadaitya from other ghosts by saying they eat only food considered religiously clean. Scroll’s fuller account connects this distinction with Reverend Lal Behari Day’s writing and literary examples. The wording is best treated as an attributed description, not a verified quotation from Day’s original text.
What do ordinary Bengali bhuts eat?
W. Crooke’s 1894 book An Introduction to the Popular Religion and Folklore of Northern India records Bengali bhuts as eating rice and many kinds of human food, with fish as a favorite. This is a historical record of folklore, not a survey of present-day beliefs or proof that every community tells the same stories.

Food preferences can mark social identity and longing in the stories. The Scroll feature reads Petni’s appetite through gendered restrictions around food and interprets fish in Shakchunni stories through marriage symbolism. It also describes the contrast between Brahmadaitya and other ghosts as reflecting a hierarchy around ritually clean food. These are cultural readings offered by the feature; individual stories may carry different meanings.
For a documentary-minded reader, the useful distinction is between a story motif and a claim about a uniform belief: fish recurs in accounts of Petni and Shakchunni, while Brahmadaitya’s food is sometimes distinguished by ritual purity. The details depend on the account, literary context and community.
