There is no single established diet for all gnomes. A Scandinavian Christmas custom describes leaving butter-topped porridge for the nisse or tomte, while one modern fantasy game gives its garden gnomes a varied diet. Those are distinct traditions and fictional rules—not a universal menu.
What do traditional gnomes eat?
Some folklore describes gnomes as spirits associated with the earth, mountains, minerals, or hidden treasure, but it does not specify what they eat. The 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica entry on gnomes connects them with mineral veins and hidden treasure without giving a food list: 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica: Gnome.
Later esoteric writing attributed to Paracelsus and other writers describes different kinds of gnomes linked to earth, rocks, minerals, trees, and forests. It says they have appetites and spend much time eating, but does not identify particular foods. That account represents an esoteric tradition, not a definitive menu shared by all folklore.
Do gnomes eat porridge?
In a Scandinavian Christmas custom described by a University of Kentucky 4-H educational publication, people leave julegrot—Christmas porridge—with butter for the nisse or tomte. The publication describes these figures as gnome-like trolls in the tradition it discusses. Its wording is specific: “In one legend, the nisse or tomte felt insulted until they were given a Christmas porridge, called julegrot.” Read this as a custom involving those named beings, not proof that every kind of gnome traditionally eats porridge: University of Kentucky 4-H: Christmas Around the World.

What do garden gnomes eat?
Garden gnome statues are ornaments, so they do not literally eat. In fiction, the answer depends on the particular story or game. A 2015 fantasy role-playing supplement says its garden gnomes have “no fixed diet” and are commonly seen eating fruits, vegetables, small rodents, and insects. That list belongs to that game’s setting; it is not evidence of a historical custom: 2015 fantasy role-playing supplement.
How the different answers compare
| Tradition or depiction | What it says about food | What the claim establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Folkloric gnomes in the 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica | No foods are listed. | Gnomes are described as earth and mountain spirits associated with minerals and hidden treasure. |
| Later esoteric writing | Gnomes are said to eat, but no specific foods are named. | An esoteric account attributes appetites to gnomes; it does not provide a universal folklore rule. |
| Scandinavian nisse or tomte Christmas custom | Christmas porridge with butter is left as an offering. | A specific custom concerning nisse or tomte, described as gnome-like in the University of Kentucky publication. |
| Garden gnomes in a 2015 fantasy role-playing supplement | Fruits, vegetables, small rodents, and insects; no fixed diet. | A fictional diet within that game’s setting. |
Why there is no one gnome menu
“Gnome” refers to beings in different folkloric, esoteric, and fictional traditions. A food offering associated with a nisse or tomte does not automatically apply to every gnome, and a game’s description cannot establish a historical custom. For a gnome in a particular book, film, or game, use that work’s own details rather than combining rules from unrelated depictions.
