At Disney’s Entertainment Showcase on August 9, 2024, the story hook for Toy Story 5 was “Toy meets Tech”: Buzz, Woody, Jessie and the rest of the gang would face a new threat to playtime as their jobs became harder. Disney offered a broad premise, not a detailed plot synopsis. Later official material added characters and story details, but those should not be mistaken for what was disclosed on the 2024 stage.
What was revealed at D23 in 2024?
Disney’s August 9, 2024 announcement said Pixar veteran Andrew Stanton greeted the audience at the D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event showcase and shared clues about the film’s story. The central framing was “Toy meets Tech”: the toys would confront a new threat to playtime, making their jobs harder. The announcement named Buzz, Woody, Jessie and the rest of the gang, but did not explain the threat in detail or outline a sequence of events.
That makes the 2024 reveal a premise tease rather than a full synopsis. Disney did not identify the technology involved in that announcement, nor did it provide a direct attributed quote from Stanton about the story. Disney’s D23 announcement is the source for what was said at the showcase.
Who was attached to the film, and when was it scheduled?
In the 2024 announcement, Disney credited Andrew Stanton as director, McKenna Harris as co-director, and Jessica Choi as producer. It also announced a theatrical opening date of June 19, 2026. That is the date Disney announced at the time; the announcement alone does not establish the film’s later availability or release status.

What later official material added
Subsequent official coverage expanded the picture, but it belongs to a later timeline than the D23 2024 reveal.
Destination D23 in 2025
A D23 report published August 30, 2025 said Pixar presented a preview, identified Smarty Pants as a character voiced by Conan O’Brien, and again used the “Toy Meets Tech” framing, describing toys facing electronics. These are details from Destination D23 2025, not from Disney’s 2024 announcement. D23’s 2025 report provides that later context.

Story and character details in 2026
A D23 behind-the-scenes feature published June 16, 2026 said the film reunites Woody and Buzz and gives Jessie her own journey. It introduced Lilypad, a tablet device that arrives with ideas about what is best for Bonnie. The feature also credited Andrew Stanton with directing and co-writing the screenplay with co-director Kenna Harris, and named Lindsey Collins as producer. These expanded details and the updated credits come from the 2026 feature, rather than the 2024 stage announcement. Read D23’s 2026 behind-the-scenes feature.
The same feature included later remarks from the filmmakers and crew. Stanton said, “The toys don’t really age, but the world does.” Harris said the team wanted to bring the expected fun, thrills and humor while exploring an aspect of childhood not yet covered by the series. Visual effects supervisor Thomas Jordan described the idea as asking what it would mean if every child had a unique way of imagining playtime; producer Lindsey Collins said the goal was to show what being inside Bonnie’s imagination might feel like. Those comments were made in the later feature, not at the 2024 showcase.

What the 2024 announcement does—and does not—establish
- Established in 2024: Disney’s story hook was a broad conflict between toys and technology, described as a new threat to playtime.
- Not established in that announcement: the identity or nature of the threat, the role of Lilypad, or the more specific character and plot details later described by D23 and Pixar.
- Useful chronology: treat the June 19, 2026 date and the 2024 creative credits as what Disney announced then; consult the later official material for subsequent story descriptions and credits.
