Yennefer and Geralt uncover his role in the conspiracy; his larger plan is tied to Ciri, not a romance with Yennefer.
How did Vilgefortz betray Yennefer?
In Netflix’s Season 3, Vilgefortz is the hidden antagonist behind the conspiracy that destabilizes Aretuza. He is secretly aligned with Nilfgaard and has been directing Lydia and Rience. Yennefer and Geralt piece together that he is the traitor, as described in Netflix Tudum’s Season 3 ending explainer.
The betrayal is political and strategic: Vilgefortz conceals his allegiance while manipulating events around the mages’ gathering. It is not presented as a private romantic betrayal between him and Yennefer.
What did Vilgefortz do at Aretuza?
At the turning point of the coup, Vilgefortz opens a portal that lets Francesca, Filavandrel, Cahir, and Scoia’tael fighters enter Aretuza. Their arrival helps set the Thanedd coup in motion and contributes to the academy’s fall. Netflix’s Episode 5 explainer and ending explainer describe his role in the deception and attack.

Vilgefortz’s wider scheme concerns Ciri. Netflix’s later Vilgefortz character explainer frames Yennefer’s continuing concern as finding out what he wants with Ciri. That makes Yennefer his adversary in the effort to protect Ciri; it does not establish that he targeted Yennefer as a romantic or sexual partner.

Netflix identifies Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Time of Contempt as a major source of inspiration for Season 3. That does not establish that every event or detail in the series matches the novel scene for scene. The account above describes the Netflix adaptation, not a claim about every corresponding moment in the book.
