She believes his royal blood can help Stannis Baratheon defeat rival claimants to the throne. Her plan later goes further: she intends to sacrifice Gendry, but Davos frees him before she can.
Why did Melisandre take Gendry to Dragonstone?
Melisandre recognizes Gendry as the bastard son of King Robert Baratheon. That makes him valuable to her because she believes royal blood has magical power. Gendry, however, does not initially understand the political importance of his parentage.
What did she do to him?
Melisandre seduces Gendry, then restrains him on a bed and places leeches on him to draw blood. She uses the blood in a ritual intended to curse Stannis’s rival claimants: Robb Stark, Balon Greyjoy and Joffrey Baratheon. The scene shows Melisandre and Stannis treating Gendry’s royal lineage as a means to advance Stannis’s campaign.
Was Gendry sacrificed?
No. Melisandre’s plan ultimately includes sacrificing him, but Davos objects and helps Gendry escape Dragonstone by boat before the sacrifice takes place.
