Trump and the White House denied that he wrote or signed it; the available reporting does not establish authorship.
What the note reportedly says
CBS News reported that the image shows an imagined exchange between “Donald” and “Jeffrey,” set inside a line drawing of a woman. The reported text reads:

“We have certain things in common, Jeffrey.”
“Enigmas never age.”
“A pal is a wonderful thing. Happy Birthday — and may every day be another wonderful secret. Donald J. Trump.”
These are words reported as visible in the image, not verified statements by Trump. The phrase “certain things in common” does not identify what the supposed commonalities were, and the available sources do not establish what “another wonderful secret” meant. CBS News’ September 8, 2025 report describes the image and its wording.

What the birthday book was and when the image became public
The book was reportedly assembled for Epstein’s 50th birthday in 2003. CBS News reported that the House Oversight Committee’s subpoena sought the book, described as compiled by Ghislaine Maxwell.
On September 8, 2025, House Oversight Democrats released the image. The committee’s official notice says it released records supplied by Epstein’s estate pursuant to Chairman James Comer’s August 25, 2025 subpoena. That establishes the stated route by which records reached the committee; it does not, by itself, establish who wrote or signed this particular item. The committee’s release notice also says it had obtained information about Epstein’s bank accounts and would pursue those records.

Did Trump write or sign it?
That remains disputed in the sources available here. Trump denied authorship and the drawing. ABC News reported on September 10, 2025, that he told reporters, “It’s not my signature and it’s not the way I speak.” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said, “The president did not write this letter. He did not sign this letter.” The same report said Leavitt indicated the White House would support forensic analysis of the signature.
Committee chair James Comer told reporters, “The president says he did not sign it, so I take the president at his word.” The sources cited here do not report a conclusive forensic examination result, so the image’s publication should not be treated as authentication. ABC News’ report recounts the denials and proposed analysis.

How officials framed the release
Comer’s statement in the committee’s September 8 release said, “President Trump is not accused of any wrongdoing and Democrats are ignoring the new information the Committee received today.” That is Comer’s characterization, not a finding by the full committee. Democratic members publicized the alleged note image, while Republicans and Democrats differed in their public framing of the material and the release, as reported by The Washington Post.
A congressional report filed in 2026 also refers to the birthday-book item. It represents a later congressional argument, not independent forensic proof of who authored the note. The Government Publishing Office report should be read in that context.

What can and cannot be concluded
- Supported: House Oversight Democrats released an image described in contemporaneous reporting as an alleged note in Epstein’s 2003 birthday book, using records supplied by Epstein’s estate.
- Reported text: The image is described as containing an imagined dialogue and the quoted birthday message above.
- Disputed: Trump and the White House denied he wrote or signed it.
- Not established by these sources: A conclusive forensic authentication result, authorship, or the intended meaning of the phrases in the note.
- Not demonstrated by the inscription alone: Criminal conduct. The existence of a reported birthday-book message is not proof of wrongdoing.
