Demi Moore described making The Substance as emotionally vulnerable and physically demanding. In a 2024 interview with the Los Angeles Times, she recounted developing shingles during her first week off and said a repeated-takes makeup scene left her face raw. The film also required an extensive shoot in France, with substantial practical prosthetic and effects work. The phrase “brutal, bloody shoot” is not established as Moore’s own wording in the available interviews, so the specifics matter more than the headline.

What did Demi Moore say about filming The Substance?

Moore’s account points to a production that tested her emotionally and physically, rather than to one single incident. She told the Los Angeles Times: “To give you an idea of the intensity, my first week that I actually had off, where it was just Margaret working, I got shingles.” This is Moore’s reported account of her health during production, not an independently verified medical record.

She also described a scene in which her character, Elisabeth Sparkle, repeatedly wipes off and reapplies makeup before a date. Moore said it involved three setups and around 15 takes for each, and that her face became raw. The scene’s repeated action made it a particular physical strain within a shoot built around close attention to bodies and appearance.

How the film’s subject shaped the experience

The Substance is writer-director Coralie Fargeat’s 2024 feature. Moore plays Elisabeth, an aging celebrity who uses a substance that creates a younger version of herself, Sue, played by Margaret Qualley. Dennis Quaid plays Harvey. The Cannes official film record lists a 140-minute runtime and the film’s 2024 Best Screenplay award.

The story’s fixation on aging, appearance and the demand to become more desirable also resonated with Moore beyond the role. In an interview with Variety, she said the film’s ideas about being “discarded” and “overlooked” felt relatable to people generally, not only women. She added that the experience gave her greater appreciation for herself as she is.

Why was the production so demanding?

A long shoot combining different kinds of work

The production was filmed in France, including the Paris region and the Côte d’Azur. The French National Centre for Cinema and the Moving Image (CNC) account says filming lasted 108 days. The Los Angeles Times separately reported 87 days of principal photography at Studios d’Epinay near Paris, followed by 30 days of prosthetic close-up filming. Those figures describe different reported phases and should not be added or treated as a single reconciled count.

The work ranged from outdoor location scenes to effects-heavy sequences. CNC line producer Nicolas Royer said some outdoor filming on the Côte d’Azur involved a crew of eight, while the most spectacular effects scenes involved 150 to 200 people. That contrast helps explain why the production’s demands varied sharply from one scene to another.

Practical prosthetics and digital effects

The film combined prosthetics and practical effects with digital work; it did not rely on only one technique. Royer said Fargeat wanted the effects to have an organic foundation and to allow time for close work on bodies and prosthetics. That approach made physical detail central to the production, especially in a film whose transformations are part of its horror and visual storytelling.

What did Moore mean by calling a scene violent?

Moore told the Los Angeles Times, “By far the most violent scene in the entire movie is me having to sit across from Dennis Quaid eating shrimp.” She was describing an unsettling scene in the film, not reporting violence on set. Keeping that context clear avoids confusing the movie’s grotesque imagery with the conditions of production.

Was “brutal, bloody shoot” Moore’s exact phrase?

The available interviews substantiate Moore’s descriptions of vulnerability, shingles during her first week off, and the difficulty of the repeated-takes mirror scene. They do not establish “brutal, bloody shoot” as a verbatim phrase she used. It is more accurate to describe the production through the experiences and production details she actually discussed.
