Although the report appeared after Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster were seen holding hands, Furness was not quoted commenting directly on their relationship.
What did Deborra-Lee Furness say?
In an interview with the Herald Sun, quoted by PerthNow on January 28, 2025, Furness spoke about work and what she wanted to do next. She said: “I’ve got some projects in New York. I’m in my chapter three. I’m a creative, I love being creative in a variety of areas and I think I’ll be doing more travelling.”
The report also said she had possible film offers in Australia. Her quoted comments focused on her plans, not on Jackman, Foster or the status of their relationship.
What did “goes public” refer to?
In January 2025, Jackman and Foster were seen holding hands in California. PerthNow described the appearance as coming after months of speculation and roughly three weeks before its January 28 story. It establishes that they were seen together in public; it does not establish when a private relationship began.

How does this fit the timeline?
- September 2023: Jackman and Furness announced their separation after 27 years of marriage. Their joint statement said they had decided to separate to pursue individual growth, described their family as their highest priority and asked for privacy. The Associated Press reported their statement: “We have been blessed to share almost 3 decades together as husband and wife in a wonderful, loving marriage. Our journey now is shifting and we have decided to separate to pursue our individual growth.”
- January 2025: Jackman and Foster were seen holding hands in California; Furness’s interview about her plans was reported on January 28.
- May 2025: After filing for divorce, Furness made a separate statement about betrayal, healing and moving forward.
Was the January interview the “betrayal” statement?
No. The comments about “chapter three” came in the January interview. In May, following her divorce filing, Furness issued a separate statement reported by ABC News: “My heart and compassion goes out to everyone who has traversed the traumatic journey of betrayal. It’s a profound wound that cuts deep.” The Los Angeles Times reported that she did not elaborate on what she meant by betrayal.
The two remarks belong to different moments and contexts. The May statement should not be folded into the January interview or treated as an explanation of it.
