The available interview does not identify which part of DTF St. Louis Episode 4’s rap was not originally scripted. David Harbour discusses learning the signing for the performance and recalls Todrick Hall performing the song, but he does not say that any particular lyric, gesture, or other element was improvised.
What Harbour said about preparing for the performance
In a March 24, 2026 interview with Men’s Health, Harbour described working with two American Sign Language coaches: one for basic ASL and another experienced in signing at concerts, major events, and newscasts. He explained that performance signing can allow more freedom than ordinary sign language.
“I had an ASL coach. I had a couple of ASL coaches—one basic ASL, normal sign language, and another who does that work at concerts, or big events, or newscasts or things like that, which you can be a little freer with.”
Harbour said he worked with the performance coach for a couple of weeks. He also recalled that Todrick Hall came in and performed the song, and that Harbour did the full number twice, “maybe.” His account describes preparation and performance; it does not identify a particular unscripted passage.

Which part of the rap was not scripted?
The interview does not answer that specific question. It does not say whether the unscripted element was a lyric, a signing choice, a gesture, blocking, or something else. Assigning the moment to any one of those would go beyond Harbour’s account.
DTF St. Louis is an HBO limited series created by Steven Conrad and starring Harbour, Jason Bateman, and Linda Cardellini, according to Men’s Health. The interview is useful context for how Harbour prepared for the number, but it does not confirm the title’s premise about a specific part being unscripted.
