T.C.A. Raghavan’s Circles of Freedom: Friendship, Love and Loyalty in the Indian National Struggle approaches India’s independence movement through Asaf Ali and the people connected to him. Rather than following a single life in isolation, it uses friendships, marriage and political disagreements to bring a wider national story into view.
What the book is about
Asaf Ali is the book’s central figure, but the narrative’s focus extends to his circle and the public events shaping their lives. That gives Raghavan room to explore how political commitments and personal relationships intersected, rather than treating the freedom struggle only as a sequence of campaigns or a portrait of one leader. Reviews in Scroll and Mint describe the book as a contextual account built around Ali and his connections.
Who belongs to Asaf Ali’s circle?
The circle includes people whose roles bring different dimensions of political and personal life into the story:
- Aruna Asaf Ali, his wife, whose life places marriage and women’s experiences within the movement’s political history.
- Sarojini Naidu, Ali’s friend and a prominent figure in the national movement.
- Syud Hossain and Syed Mahmud, connected figures in the wider political world the book examines.
- Jawaharlal Nehru, M.A. Ansari and M.A. Jinnah, among the secondary characters identified in the Scroll review.
Raghavan’s own excerpt for The Wire describes an approach that brings less-central figures, women’s lives and the personal costs of political engagement into focus.

Which political questions shape the narrative?
Ali’s place as a moderate Muslim in the national movement offers one lens on Congress politics, Muslim identity politics and Hindu–Muslim relations. The narrative also attends to disagreements over political methods, including tensions between constitutional and revolutionary approaches. These themes help show that the movement contained competing ideas and loyalties, not just a single shared strategy.
According to Scroll’s review, the book gives particular attention to Delhi in the 1920s and to Ahmednagar jail during 1942–45. Those settings connect political debate to the lived circumstances of the people at the story’s center. They are the reviewer’s account of the book’s emphasis, rather than an independent verification here of every historical claim in it.
How its approach differs from a single-person biography
A useful way to decide whether this kind of history suits you is to compare its narrative lens with a conventional biography of one freedom fighter:
| Question | Circles of Freedom’s approach | What a single-person biography typically foregrounds |
|---|---|---|
| Who carries the story? | Asaf Ali, viewed through a circle of friends, family and political associates. | One subject’s life and development. |
| How are political disagreements handled? | Identity, party politics and differences over political method emerge through relationships and context. | The subject’s political positions and choices are usually the primary organizing thread. |
| How does private life relate to public events? | Friendship, marriage and personal consequences are part of the historical frame. | Personal relationships may be included, but the subject’s individual trajectory remains central. |
This comparison describes the approaches suggested by the reviews and author excerpt; it is not a claim that all single-person biographies use the same method.
