That is a reported paraphrase of Koch’s point—not a verified verbatim quote or proof that the documentary’s account is incomplete in any definitive sense.
What did Cooper Koch say the documentary left out?
A ScreenRant summary reproduced by IMDb reported that Koch praised the documentary but questioned why it omitted information about evidence that led the brothers’ lawyers to file a habeas petition in 2023. The accessible summary does not provide Koch’s complete answer, so the point should be treated as a secondary report of his comment, not as his exact wording. IMDb’s reproduced ScreenRant summary

The specific evidence Koch had in mind is not established by that summary. Nor does it, by itself, show that the documentary claimed to cover every development or that the evidence proves either brother’s account. The precise omission and its significance cannot be determined from the available reporting.
How the documentary differs from Monsters
| Title | Format and approach |
|---|---|
| The Menendez Brothers | A 2024 documentary directed by Alejandro Hartmann. Netflix describes it as built around new audio interviews with Lyle and Erik Menendez and voices including their cousin Diane Vander Molen, prosecutor Pamela Bozanich, lawyers, journalists, jurors, family members and other observers. Netflix Media Center |
| Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story | A separate scripted dramatization. Cooper Koch plays Erik Menendez and Nicholas Alexander Chavez plays Lyle Menendez. Netflix’s description presents the prosecution’s financial-motive argument alongside the brothers’ account of abuse and fear. Netflix Tudum |
The distinction matters: Koch’s reported comment concerns a documentary’s selection of material, while his own performance is in a dramatized series. A scripted scene and an interview in a documentary are different kinds of presentation, and neither should be mistaken for a complete court record.

What the documentary’s director said about its scope
Hartmann described his aim as presenting the brothers’ voices alongside other perspectives, including those of the prosecution and jurors, so viewers could reach their own conclusions. He said, “I wanted to give audiences material to take their own conclusions, but especially to get them thinking about this story as a tragedy.” Netflix Tudum, October 14, 2024
That stated approach helps explain why the film includes multiple voices, but it does not establish that every piece of evidence or later legal development is addressed. A documentary can offer a range of perspectives without serving as an exhaustive account of every filing.

The case background behind the comment
José and Kitty Menendez were killed on August 20, 1989, and Lyle and Erik were convicted in 1996, according to TIME. In its account of the case, TIME described the prosecution’s theory as a financial motive tied to the family estate, which it estimated at roughly $14 million, and the defense position as fear after years of alleged sexual abuse by their father. These are competing accounts advanced by the parties; the estate figure is TIME’s estimate, not an independently verified accounting. TIME, October 3, 2024
The reported reference to a 2023 habeas petition points to later legal developments, but the petition itself and its supporting material are not identified in the accessible account of Koch’s comment. It would therefore be premature to name a specific item of evidence as what the documentary supposedly left out.

What viewers can—and cannot—infer
- Established by the reporting: Koch reportedly asked why the documentary did not include information about evidence associated with a 2023 habeas petition.
- Not established: the full wording of Koch’s answer, the exact evidence he meant, or the documentary’s treatment of that evidence in detail.
- Useful context: Hartmann said he sought to include multiple perspectives and leave viewers with material for their own conclusions.
- Not a current status update: Netflix reported in August 2025 that both brothers had been denied parole that month and that a separate court petition remained pending then. That dated report does not establish what happened afterward, so it cannot be used to describe their legal status in October 2026. Netflix Tudum, August 2025
Where to find more background
Hartmann named Robert Rand’s book The Menendez Murders and Dominick Dunne’s articles as important sources in his preparation for the documentary. His interview offers more detail on the director’s research and editorial aims. Read Hartmann’s Netflix Tudum interview.
