- Return to Pandora for the third chapter of Marine turned Na’vi leader Jake Sully and his family. Reeling from one death, the Sullys set out to prevent another — aided by the Wind Traders. But on the way, they’re attacked by the Ash People, who blame Eywa for their ravaged home. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes may affect photosensitive viewers.

The first film’s score appears in Rotten Tomatoes’ James Cameron ranking guide; The Way of Water and Fire and Ash figures are on their respective film page and film page, accessed October 4, 2026. In this comparison, “record” means a franchise low for the Tomatometer—not a high-score record, a box-office record, or a claim about every measure of audience response.
What do Rotten Tomatoes’ summaries say?
The critics consensus praises the film’s visual effects and spectacle while faulting it for repeating narrative beats from the earlier films. Rotten Tomatoes’ audience summary, by contrast, highlights an immersive visual experience and the return to Pandora. These are aggregator summaries, not unanimous verdicts from every critic or viewer.

For theatrical context, Disney’s opening-weekend report described 66% of the film’s opening-weekend box office as coming from premium formats and 56% from 3D. Those figures concern ticket sales and presentation formats, not ratings. Disney’s report also includes a statement from 20th Century Studios president Steve Asbell about the film’s big-screen appeal.
Why do some earlier reports give a different score?
Opening-period figures are dated snapshots and use distinct measures. On December 21, 2025, the Associated Press reported a 68% Rotten Tomatoes score and described it as a series low at that time. Disney separately reported a 91% Rotten Tomatoes Verified Moviegoers score at opening, alongside a 4.5/5 PostTrak score and an A CinemaScore. These historical figures should not be substituted for the October 2026 Tomatometer or Popcornmeter readings.

That box-office context is separate from Rotten Tomatoes scores: a critic percentage does not measure ticket sales or establish a film’s eventual commercial performance.
