What Carrie Bickmore and Chris Walker announced in January 2023
In January 2023, Bickmore and Walker issued matching statements announcing that they had decided to separate. They said their focus was parenting and supporting their three children, Ollie, Evie and Addie, and said they would make no further comment at that stage. 7NEWS reported the announcement on 18 January 2023; PerthNow covered it the following day.

The published statement described the moment as difficult and said they would concentrate on “parenting, loving and supporting our three amazing children, Ollie, Evie and Addie with everything we’ve got.” The names were given together in the statement; reporting identifies Ollie as Bickmore’s son from an earlier relationship, whom Walker was a stepfather to, and Evie and Adelaide as children the couple had together.
What Walker said immediately after the announcement
Walker also posted a separate message thanking friends, family and colleagues on what he called an “otherwise rubbish day.” He added that he was glad to be with the “three best people on earth” to finish it. The note expressed gratitude and pointed to being with the children; it did not give a reason for the separation. These remarks were reported by PerthNow and 7NEWS.

What Walker said in August 2024
In August 2024, coverage of Walker’s interview on Luke Darcy’s Empowering Leaders podcast reported a fuller reflection on the separation. Walker said: “We built a family together. It’s what I thought our life would be. But life had a different plan.” He also described the difficulty of saying goodbye to the children twice a week. WHO reported the interview comments on 26 August 2024, and Now To Love published corroborating coverage that day.
In those reported remarks, Walker said the media attention was not a major concern for him compared with the experience of saying goodbye to the children twice a week. The comments shifted the focus from the public announcement to his personal experience of the family change and its effect on parenting.

Did Bickmore or Walker explain why they separated?
No reason was given in the couple’s announcement or in the cited coverage of Walker’s later comments. A contemporary report mentioned speculation about a video-call incident, but it did not establish that this caused the separation. The New Daily’s report is not evidence of a confirmed explanation, so the cause should be treated as unknown.
