After Liam Payne died in October 2024, Cheryl spoke publicly about the loss their son, Bear, would face and warned that he might later encounter distressing media coverage of his father. The Associated Press reproduced the wording of her statement; ITV also highlighted her concern that Bear would have to face never seeing his father again.
What Cheryl said about Bear
In a statement reported by the Associated Press on October 18, 2024, Cheryl described Payne not only as a public figure but as Bear’s father, and focused on the loss their son would have to live with:
“Liam was not only a pop star and a celebrity, he was a son, a brother, an uncle, a dear friend and a father to our 7 year old son. A son that now has to face the reality of never seeing his father again.”
AP described Bear as seven years old at the time. ITV independently foregrounded Cheryl’s words about Bear facing the reality of never seeing his father again.
