Donald Trump’s run as host of the U.S. The Apprentice ended in 2015, but the franchise did not: its celebrity edition continued with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Since Trump’s departure, former cast members and production staff have described troubling moments behind the scenes, a former producer has made a specific allegation about a racist slur, and public access to unaired footage has remained unresolved. Those accounts add context to the show’s carefully edited image of Trump as a decisive business leader, but they are not a complete recording of what happened on set.
When did Trump leave The Apprentice?
The U.S. series debuted in January 2004 as a business competition built around workplace-style tasks and boardroom eliminations. Trump hosted 14 seasons through 2015, and “You’re fired” became the show’s signature line, according to the Television Academy Foundation.
NBC announced in June 2015 that it was ending its business relationship with Trump after his remarks about immigrants. NBCUniversal said, “Due to the recent derogatory statements by Donald Trump regarding immigrants, NBCUniversal is ending its business relationship with Mr. Trump,” as reported by TheWrap. The celebrity edition continued afterward with Arnold Schwarzenegger as host, so Trump’s exit was the end of his hosting run, not the end of the entire format.
What did people recall about the show’s early impact?
Former NBC East Coast public-relations director Jim Dowd later recalled that the day after the premiere he received 297 media requests between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. In a 2016 PBS FRONTLINE interview, Dowd described the burst of attention and Trump’s rapid rise as a popular figure beyond the show. The figure is Dowd’s recollection of press requests, not a television ratings number.

What did former cast and crew say happened behind the scenes?
In 2016, reporting collected accounts from former cast and crew members alleging sexually charged or demeaning remarks during production. These are attributed recollections and allegations, not a full public record of everything said on set. They also do not establish that every described incident was captured by a camera or preserved in an archive. BuzzFeed News reported on the allegations and the dispute over footage.
What was the 2024 allegation involving Kwame Jackson?
In 2024, former producer Bill Pruitt, who worked on the first two seasons, alleged that Trump used a racist slur while discussing first-season finalist Kwame Jackson. Jackson said Trump did not use the slur to his face. Trump denied Pruitt’s account, according to The New York Times. The allegation, Jackson’s response and Trump’s denial should be kept distinct: the account has not become an authenticated public recording of the exchange.

Are The Apprentice tapes public?
No publicly released footage establishes the reported exchanges. Coverage has described a dispute over access to unaired material, but it has not established whether particular incidents were recorded or whether any such recordings remain in an archive. Mark Burnett said he did not have the ability or right to release footage, as reported by The New York Times. That statement does not establish what footage exists or what it contains.

The program presented Trump as a decisive business authority through a competition built around tasks, boardroom judgments and eliminations. That edited persona is not the same thing as a documentary record of his business career or of every event behind the scenes. In a 2024 retrospective, former producer Pruitt told The New York Times, “We weren’t making a documentary.” That is a production perspective on the show’s format; it does not, by itself, prove that a specific scene was fabricated. The difference matters when weighing what viewers saw against later accounts from participants and crew.
