In her first interview after returning to the United States, Brittney Griner described the psychological toll of detention in Russia, including suicidal thoughts in her first weeks in jail and fear that her body might not be returned to her family. The account came in an ABC News 20/20 special with Robin Roberts. It is Griner’s personal testimony, not a statistical account of conditions for every person held in a Russian prison.
What Griner said about prison and detention
ABC described the special as a wide-ranging interview about Griner’s arrest, her experience in the Russian penal system, and her release. Griner spoke of the anguish of being held as what she called a political prisoner and of feeling “less than human.” The program also included a segment in which she opened a duffle bag from Russia and shared personal possessions that she said helped her endure the ordeal. ABC’s announcement also said Roberts interviewed Griner’s wife, Cherelle, her attorney, presidential envoy Roger Carstens, and agent Lindsay Kagawa Colas.
Her account of the mental-health toll
Griner told Roberts that she thought about suicide more than once during her first weeks in jail. The Associated Press reported her words: “I wanted to take my life more than once in the first weeks.” She also said she feared her body might not be returned to her family. These are serious, attributed recollections about her experience; they should not be treated as a general description of every Russian detention facility or detainee. The Associated Press reported these remarks on May 2, 2024.
What she said about the arrest
Griner discussed the “mental lapse” that led to cannabis-oil vape cartridges being found in her luggage. ABC News reported that she said the cartridges had been packed accidentally. “This was a mistake. It was an accident, which I understand accidents have repercussions,” she told Roberts. Her interview addressed both the accidental packing she described and the consequences she faced under Russian law. ABC News published the advance interview report on April 29, 2024.

How the interview fits the timeline
- February 17, 2022: ABC News reported that Griner was detained at Sheremetyevo International Airport after cartridges were found in her luggage.
- August 4, 2022: ABC News reported that a Russian court sentenced her to nine years in prison.
- December 8, 2022: ABC reported that she was released in a prisoner swap after roughly ten months in detention.
- April 29–30, 2024: ABC News published advance coverage and announced the interview special.
- May 1, 2024: ABC scheduled the one-hour 20/20 special with Robin Roberts. The announcement said there would be a first look on Good Morning America and next-day Hulu availability at that time; it does not establish present streaming access.
What the special covered beyond prison conditions
The program also examined the prisoner-swap negotiations that led to Griner’s release. The Associated Press reported that Griner said she was made to write a letter in Russian to Vladimir Putin before her release: “They made me write this letter. It was in Russian.” That statement, like her description of her mental state, is an account attributed to Griner in the interview.
ABC announced that her memoir, Coming Home, would be available May 7, 2024. The memoir is a separate source for readers seeking a fuller account; the announced date does not establish current edition or retail availability.

How to interpret her description
The interview offers a first-person account of Griner’s experience during detention from February to December 2022. It documents what she said she felt, feared, and endured, while ABC’s coverage supplies the reported arrest, sentence, and release chronology. The available accounts do not provide an independently measured statistic about Russian prison conditions, so her testimony should remain attributed to her rather than generalized to all Russian prisons.
