Britney Spears wrote in an Instagram caption on October 19, 2025, that she felt “brain damage happened to me a long time ago,” then added that she had “of course moved on from that troubling time” and was “blessed to be alive.” Those are Spears’s words, not a confirmed medical diagnosis: contemporaneous reports did not establish that she had brain damage or independently verify an injury.
What did Britney Spears say about brain damage?
In the caption, Spears wrote: “I do feel like my wings were taken away and brain damage happened to me a long time ago 100 percent … I have of course moved on from that troubling time in my life and I’m blessed to be alive…” TMZ reproduced the caption in a report published October 20, 2025. TMZ’s report places the words in the context of a photograph of Spears on horseback and her comparison of her back and shoulder blades to “wings.”
The phrase “brain damage” should be understood as Spears’s description of what she felt had happened. The reports do not provide a clinical diagnosis, identify a specific injury, or establish its cause.
What did Spears mean by “moved on”?
She paired the reference to a troubling period with the statement that she had moved on and felt blessed to be alive. The caption does not explain precisely what “moved on” means to her, nor does it say that the experience had no lasting effects. It is safest to report the words as written rather than infer her present health or emotional state.

What experience did she describe in the caption?
Spears connected the caption to what she called a traumatic experience, writing that “for 4 months I no longer had my private door and illegally was forced to not use my feet or body to go anywhere.” She also said she could not dance or move for five months. These are Spears’s descriptions; the reporting does not independently establish the circumstances she described. Just Jared reproduced the longer passage.
How did reports connect the post to 2018?
Billboard’s November 3, 2025 report placed Spears’s account alongside her four-month rehab stay in 2018, during her 13-year conservatorship. Billboard also noted that her post did not elaborate on the timeframe or nature of the reported brain injury. The caption itself does not establish that the 2018 stay caused a brain injury or precisely identify the period she meant. Billboard’s account supplies context, not a medical finding.
What was happening around the post?
The post appeared amid coverage of Kevin Federline’s memoir You Thought You Knew. Billboard reported that Spears had posted about Federline and the book around the same time, and quoted her representatives criticizing people they said were profiting from her story. That establishes the news-cycle context, but does not prove why Spears wrote the caption.
The memoir Spears referenced in her caption, The Woman in Me, is background to her own account; its mention does not independently verify the events she described.

What is known about the conservatorship?
A judge terminated Spears’s conservatorship in November 2021, according to The Independent. The outlet describes contrasting positions: Spears’s account of the arrangement and her father’s legal team’s stated view that it was intended to protect her health, career and assets. Those positions should remain attributed to their respective sources; neither establishes a medical explanation for the October 2025 caption.
