He framed those numbers as a direction focused on quality—not a binding annual limit or a verified rule for Marvel’s schedule today.
What did Bob Iger say?
On the Q2 2024 earnings call, Iger said Disney was working with Marvel to reduce output and focus more on quality. He then said: “We’re slowly going to decrease volume and go to probably about two TV series a year instead of what had become four and reduce our film output from maybe four a year to two to the maximum three.” The Walt Disney Company Q2 2024 earnings-call transcript records the statement.
The qualifiers matter. “Slowly,” “probably,” “about” and “maybe” make this a forward-looking target, not a formal quota. Iger described films as moving from a level of maybe four a year to two, with three as the maximum in that direction. For television, he said Marvel would probably move toward about two series annually, down from four.
How the film and TV targets compare
| Medium | Iger’s 2024 comparison | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Films | From “maybe four a year” to two, with a maximum of three | A proposed reduction, not a guaranteed cap for every year or every kind of Marvel screen project. |
| TV series | From four to “probably about two” a year | A qualified annual target, described as part of a gradual decrease. |
The statement concerned Marvel’s release volume. It did not specify a year when the transition would be complete, define which projects count toward each annual total, or establish a rule binding every future slate.

Why did Disney want to reduce Marvel’s output?
Iger’s stated reason was to “reduce output and focus more on quality.” He had made a similar point at a March 5, 2024 Morgan Stanley conference, saying that Marvel’s output of films and TV shows had been reduced and that focus was critical.
At that conference, Iger said Marvel had released 33 films and that their combined box office was, in his estimate, “I think, $50 million under $30 billion”—about $29.95 billion across those films, according to his approximate statement at the time. He also argued that the issue was not “audience fatigue,” but the need to make great films. Those remarks reflect Iger’s view; they do not establish that fewer releases themselves improve quality or audience demand.

What the May 2024 slate showed—and what it cannot tell us now
Contemporaneous coverage helps explain the announcement’s setting, but it should not be mistaken for a current schedule. In May 2024, TheWrap reported that Deadpool & Wolverine was the only Marvel Studios theatrical release then expected in 2024. It listed Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, The Fantastic Four and Blade among films planned for 2025 at that time. Those were expectations reported in May 2024, not confirmation of what ultimately released or what is on Marvel’s slate now.
Separately, TVLine’s May 2024 retrospective counted at least three Marvel series in each year since the Disney+ launch in 2021 and also noted additional specials. That is the outlet’s historical accounting; it is distinct from Iger’s own comparison of four series on the earnings call.

Is “up to three movies and two shows a year” Marvel’s current rule?
No current rule is established by Iger’s May 2024 remarks alone. The statement documents what Disney’s CEO said about a gradual intended reduction at that time. It does not verify whether Disney or Marvel later reaffirmed, revised or formally implemented those targets. So “up to three movies and two shows a year now” overstates both the certainty and the present-day status of the announcement.
