Bill Murray’s 2011 joke about Luke Wilson helps explain why Gene Hackman’s scenes could be tense on The Royal Tenenbaums—but it does not prove Wilson was the sole reason Hackman was difficult. At a reunion marking the film’s tenth anniversary, Murray joked that he would have set fire to the building if he had to work with Wilson and Kumar Pallana, then connected the gag to Wilson’s frequent line flubs in scenes with Hackman.
What did Bill Murray say about Luke Wilson?
At a 2011 New York Film Festival event marking the tenth anniversary of The Royal Tenenbaums, Murray quipped: “If I had to work with Kumar and Luke Wilson, I’d have set fire to this whole building!” The Film Stage’s report presents the remark amid jokes and laughter, not as a literal threat or serious accusation.
The report says Hackman’s scenes often involved Wilson, who was lovestruck with Gwyneth Paltrow at the time and frequently flubbed his lines. Murray’s joke drew on that on-set context. It does not establish that Wilson alone caused Hackman’s frustration, or that the anecdote captures the full relationship between the actors.
Why was Gene Hackman considered challenging on set?
The 2011 event report also recounts director Wes Anderson saying that Hackman had passed on the film for about a year and a half before agreeing to make it. Anderson acknowledged that Hackman could be challenging. The event included Anderson, Paltrow, Anjelica Huston, Murray, Noah Baumbach, and Eric Anderson.

Murray later described a broader tension between Hackman and Anderson. In a 2025 interview with the Associated Press, as reported by Us Weekly, Murray said older, accomplished actors can be “really rough” on young directors, adding that Hackman was “really rough on Wes.” He recalled about 25 takes in which Hackman performed correctly while another actor repeatedly missed the scene; when that actor finally got it right, Murray said, Hackman seemed ready to throw him off a ledge.
Murray did not name the other actor in that repeated-take story. It should not be assumed to have been Luke Wilson or conflated with the specific Wilson anecdote from the 2011 event.

What did Murray say about Hackman working with children and dogs?
In a separate appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Murray said Hackman had to work with children and dogs, which put him in “very challenging positions to work.” Murray’s explanation was that Hackman felt a sense of responsibility and wondered what he was doing working with those people in difficult circumstances. That comment offers another part of Murray’s view of the production, rather than evidence that Wilson caused Hackman’s behavior.

What the anecdotes do—and don’t—show
- Specific to Luke Wilson: The Film Stage’s 2011 account connects Wilson’s line flubs and scenes with Hackman to Murray’s joke.
- Broader view of Hackman: Murray’s 2025 remarks describe Hackman as tough on Anderson and recount challenging scenes, but do not identify the actor who repeatedly missed a take.
- Not established: Neither account proves that Wilson was the sole reason Hackman was difficult on set.
