On April 26, 2024, President Joe Biden told Howard Stern, “I am, somewhere. I don’t know when,” then added, “But I’m happy to debate him.” He was expressing willingness to debate Donald Trump—not announcing a date, venue or format.
What did Biden say about debating Trump?
Stern raised the possibility of a debate by saying, “I don’t know if you’re going to debate your opponent.” Biden answered: “I am, somewhere. I don’t know when. But I’m happy to debate him.” The exchange is transcribed in CNN’s transcript, published April 27, 2024; the Associated Press report from April 26 quoted the same answer.

When and where did the exchange happen?
Biden made the remark during an interview with SiriusXM host Howard Stern on April 26, 2024. The official Howard Stern Show page, published April 27, describes a wide-ranging conversation about Biden’s family, upbringing and political career and links to the full interview video.
Was a debate actually scheduled?
No schedule or terms were set in the interview. Biden explicitly said he did not know when a debate would happen, and he gave no location or format. The statement showed willingness, not a confirmed booking or agreement on arrangements.

Why did Biden’s answer attract attention?
It was more explicit than his earlier public comments about debating Trump. The AP described it as Biden’s most definitive comment on the subject up to that point; CNN characterized it as his first explicit commitment in the campaign while noting that timing remained unknown. Earlier, Biden had said the prospect depended on Trump’s behavior.
The exchange came amid public calls for both candidates to commit to debates. CBS reported that its news organization and 11 others had urged the candidates to state their commitments. Biden’s answer did not itself settle participation terms or resolve the question of when or how a debate would take place.
