He describes their relationship as romantic and sexual—not merely platonic or a cover—and says those parts of his life did not conflict. That is Diller’s account of a private relationship, not an independently verified judgment about it.
What is the truth about Barry Diller and Diane von Furstenberg’s marriage?
Diller addresses longstanding speculation about his sexuality and marriage in Who Knew. In an excerpt published by New York Magazine and covered by EL PAÍS, he says he had spent decades encountering claims that he and von Furstenberg were best friends rather than lovers. He rejects that description, recalling their early romance as passionate and saying they were lovers.

In a CBS News interview, Diller likewise said their relationship was not merely platonic. Asked whether loving von Furstenberg and being attracted to men were mutually exclusive, he replied, “I don’t see anything mutually exclusive with that, no.” He called her the bedrock of his life.
These are Diller’s descriptions of his own experience. They answer what he says about the marriage; they do not independently settle private-life speculation or establish anyone else’s account.

Was their relationship just platonic?
According to Diller, no. He describes the relationship as a love affair and disputes the idea that their marriage was a cover. The point of his memoir account is not that attraction to men and love for a woman cannot coexist, but that he says both were true for him.
Diller discussed why he chose to tell the story in public in a PBS NewsHour interview with Geoff Bennett. He said, “The only thing I did not do is make declarations,” and added, “But if I wanted to write this book, I knew I just had to tell my story true.”
