Before auditioning for The X Factor in 2010, Harry Styles sang lead in White Eskimo, a band he formed with three friends at Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School in Cheshire. The group won a school band competition, but the available accounts establish local recognition—not a measurable level of wider fame. “Formerly unknown” is best understood as a loose description, not a documented status.
White Eskimo was Styles’s school band
Styles attended Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School, where he and three friends formed White Eskimo. He was the band’s lead singer, and it won a school band competition, according to Biography.com. A 2017 profile in The Guardian likewise describes White Eskimo as a local band that won a battle-of-the-bands competition.

Those descriptions point to a modest beginning: a school group with competition success and a local profile. The cited accounts do not establish White Eskimo’s record sales, chart positions, audience size or broader public recognition, so it would be inaccurate to treat “unknown” as a quantified fact.
How Styles went from White Eskimo to One Direction
- 2010: At 16, Styles auditioned for the seventh series of The X Factor as a solo contestant. Biography.com reports that he sang Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely” at the audition and Oasis’s “Stop Crying Your Heart Out” in a later round. (Biography.com)
- After the solo rounds: Styles was eliminated as a solo act. The judges then grouped him with Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik. (Biography.com)
- The competition: The five contestants competed together as One Direction and finished third in the 2010 series, according to the Associated Press.
In an account of his audition quoted by The Guardian, Styles said: “Singing’s what I want to do. If the people that can make that happen for me don’t think I should be doing that, then it’s a major setback in my plans.” The Guardian’s profile links to video of the audition.

What “formerly unknown” means in this context
White Eskimo preceded Styles’s television audition and achieved school or local competition recognition. That is the scope the available reporting supports; it does not document the band’s wider commercial success or establish that nobody outside its immediate circle knew it. The useful distinction is between a local school-band chapter and the much larger platform Styles reached after joining One Direction.
