In 2025, former UFC champion B.J. Penn posted claims that his mother and brothers had been murdered and replaced by impostors. His mother, Lorraine Shin, later sought court protection, alleging psychological abuse. Those are separate attributed accounts: the public posts and Shin’s filing do not establish that the alleged murders occurred or prove every allegation in her filing. A judge’s later finding that Penn was fit to proceed was a procedural ruling, not a verdict or a diagnosis.
What did B.J. Penn claim about his mother?
In April 2025, Penn made social-media posts claiming that members of his family had been murdered and replaced. Reporting in May reproduced an Instagram post in which he asked police to investigate people he said were occupying his home and property. These were Penn’s claims; the reporting did not corroborate them. MMA Fighting’s May 2025 account described the posts and Shin’s subsequent filing.
What did Lorraine Shin allege in her filing?
In May 2025, Shin requested a restraining order. MMA Fighting said it reviewed a copy of her filing and statement. Shin alleged Penn had told her that she was not Lorraine Shin, that she had killed his family, and that she had taken over his mother’s identity. She also described belongings being removed from her room and other events. These are allegations reported from her filing, not findings that a court established as true.
Shin’s filing said, “I believe my son [B.J. Penn] is suffering from Capgras delusional syndrome.” That sentence expresses her belief; it is not an established diagnosis. The reporting does not independently establish a diagnosis for Penn.

What orders did the court issue?
On May 28, 2025, MMA Fighting reported that a Hawaii judge approved a temporary restraining order after Shin’s request. The story headline described a 100-foot distance requirement. Shin’s request that Penn receive medical treatment, also recounted in the article, was her request—not a court diagnosis. The report on the temporary order recounts the order and the allegations behind Shin’s request.
On August 20, 2025, MMA Fighting reported that the court issued a one-year protective order barring contact and requiring Penn to remain at least 100 yards from Shin’s residence or workplace, through May 26, 2026. That report’s account of the protective order describes its terms. The article’s reported end date is not a live check of the order’s current status. A protective order is not a criminal conviction and does not, by itself, resolve every allegation in the case.

What did the judge decide about Penn’s fitness to proceed?
Hawaii News Now reported on May 29, 2026, citing court documents, that doctors had deemed Penn mentally fit to stand trial. MMA Fighting later reproduced language from a court order signed that day: “The court, having reviewed the reports of defendant’s appointed examiner and noting that neither the state nor the defendant’s counsel contests the findings and contents of the report, finds by a preponderance of the evidence that defendant is fit to proceed.” The order’s wording is quoted by MMA Fighting; the underlying order was not independently retrieved for that report.
Fitness to proceed concerns whether a defendant can move forward in court. It is not a finding that Penn’s claims about his family are true, a verdict on the criminal case, or a diagnosis. Hawaii News Now said Penn’s lawyer planned to file dismissal motions and that Penn was expected back in court on July 8, 2026. The May 29 report does not establish what happened at that later hearing.

What is known about the case’s later status?
The latest located status report is from May 2026 and describes the expected July 8 court date. The hearing’s outcome and any later disposition are not established by the reports cited here, so it would be inaccurate to call the case dismissed, concluded, or currently pending on this record alone.
One earlier report, published May 27, 2025, said online records showed bail of $2,000. That is a dated figure from that report, not a statement of Penn’s current bail status. MMA Fighting’s arrest report provided the figure based on records available at the time.
