What Are the Six Elements of Drama? Aristotle’s Framework for Tragedy

Aristotle’s six elements—plot, character, thought, diction, song, and spectacle—offer a practical way to analyze tragedy and make drama, but they are not a universal definition of theatre.

Aristotle’s six elements of tragedy are plot, character, thought, diction, song, and spectacle. In the Poetics, he uses them to analyze how tragedy represents action—not to set out a universal definition of every kind of theatre. The framework remains a useful way to read a play or make one, while contemporary drama courses often adapt its terms and consider additional elements such as audience, space, and movement.

What are Aristotle’s six elements of tragedy?

Aristotle names six parts in the Poetics: plot, character, thought, diction, song, and spectacle. Each describes a different aspect of tragic drama, from the events being represented to the words, sounds, and visual presentation audiences experience.

Aristotle’s term What it describes Common classroom wording
Plot The arrangement of incidents: the action the play represents. Plot or dramatic structure
Character The qualities of the agents in the action, revealed in part by their choices. Character
Thought Ideas expressed through reasoning, argument, or a general truth. Sometimes theme; this is a teaching gloss, not Aristotle’s exact term.
Diction Verbal expression: the words and how they are arranged or delivered. Language or dialogue
Song Song and the musical, rhythmic, or sonic dimension of performance. Music, rhythm, or sound
Spectacle The visual presentation of the play. Stage picture, scenery, costume, or effects

The terms are not all interchangeable with their modern classroom equivalents. In particular, “theme” can point toward part of what teachers mean by thought, but Aristotle’s category also includes reasoning and argument. Likewise, “sound” is a broader practical label for the role of song and music in performance.

Why does Aristotle rank plot first?

Aristotle ranks plot first, character second, followed by thought, diction, song, and spectacle. His reason is tied to what tragedy represents: action. Plot is the organization of incidents that makes that action intelligible as a whole. In the Internet Classics Archive translation of Poetics, Chapter VI, Aristotle writes: “The Plot, then, is the first principle, and, as it were, the soul of a tragedy; Character holds the second place.”

This does not mean characters or language are unimportant. Rather, in Aristotle’s account, a tragic work depends most fundamentally on the structure of what happens. Character matters as the agents’ qualities become visible through choices within that action. He places spectacle last because it can strongly attract an audience but is less central to the poet’s craft than the arrangement of events.

How can the six elements help you analyze a play?

Use the categories as connected questions rather than a checklist that assigns a play a score. Start with the action, then notice how the other choices shape its meaning and impact.

  • Plot: What incidents form the action, and how are they arranged?
  • Character: Who acts, what do their choices reveal, and how do those choices affect events?
  • Thought: What arguments, ideas, or general truths emerge through what characters say and do?
  • Diction: What do the words, phrasing, and delivery contribute?
  • Song: How do music, rhythm, or other sound choices affect the performance?
  • Spectacle: What do the visual choices—such as scenery, costume, or effects—make the audience see?

The questions overlap in practice. A repeated phrase, for example, is diction, but it may also express an idea; a sound cue can alter how an event feels, and a visual choice can focus attention on a character’s decision.

How can you use the elements to make a short drama?

A South African Department of Basic Education Creative Arts learner book treats drama elements as tools for both making plays and analyzing meaning. Its activity sequence offers a practical starting point: develop a scenario and characters, create conflict, and make deliberate performance choices.

  1. Choose a scenario. Establish a situation that can produce an action, not just a setting.
  2. Develop characters and conflict. Give the agents different aims or pressures so their choices can move events forward.
  3. Shape the plot. Decide what happens, in what order, and how the events connect.
  4. Work on thought and diction. Clarify the ideas or arguments in the scene, then choose words and dialogue that express them.
  5. Plan sound and visual presentation. Choose whether song, dance, or other sound belongs in the performance; consider costume, makeup, props, and staging.
  6. Script and rehearse if useful. A scene can be developed through improvisation before it is written, or scripted and rehearsed as part of the process.

This sequence is a flexible teaching approach, not a rule that every play must contain song, dance, or a written script. The useful principle is to make each element serve the action and meaning you want the audience to encounter.

Are these the only elements of theatre?

No. The Poetics passage concerns tragedy, which Aristotle describes as an imitation of serious, complete action presented through action rather than narration. It is a historically important framework for analyzing that form, not a comprehensive taxonomy of modern theatre or every theatrical tradition.

Contemporary drama teaching may retain Aristotle’s six while also examining audience, dialogue, stagecraft, convention, genre, symbols, focus, space, movement, time, mood, pace, and the actor–audience relationship. The University of Sydney’s Articulate Drama 2024 Additional Resources distinguishes Aristotle’s list from this broader contemporary vocabulary. These later categories extend or adapt the framework; they should not be attributed to Aristotle as part of his original six.
