The film’s interest is not simply whether the program works. It asks what prevention may cost, especially when it involves deception and decisions affecting individual autonomy. Fantasia International Film Festival describes the story as a tense exploration of moral complexity around technology and crime prevention. Its catalog introduces that concern with the question, “Hey, Siri. Those are questions the story raises, not evidence that an actual system has feelings or operates like the fictional program.

Writer-director Franklin Ritch has said that he spoke with programmers and people developing AI programs and took an online course to learn the basics of machine learning. He described the technical material as serving the film’s themes, including childhood trauma and autonomy. That context helps explain the film’s approach, but it does not make the story a factual account of real-world policing or an empirical demonstration of crime-prevention AI. Who made The Artifice Girl?
Franklin Ritch wrote and directed the film. XYZ Films lists Tatum Matthews, Lance Henriksen, Sinda Nichols, David Girard, and Ritch among the cast. The film’s modest cast and three shooting spaces, noted in festival material, give the ethical questions room to play out through dialogue and decisions rather than spectacle. Release year and runtime: why listings differ
Festival and platform listings describe the film in different release contexts. Fantasia’s 2022 catalog identifies it as a 2022 US film, in English, with a runtime of 95 minutes. Apple TV’s US listing is dated 2023 and gives a runtime of 1 hour 33 minutes. Is The Artifice Girl based on a true story?
The cited film and interview listings do not establish that it is based on a true story. It is best described as speculative fiction: Ritch’s reported conversations with AI practitioners and introductory study of machine learning informed his approach, but the AI system and events in the story should not be treated as a documented real-world tool or case.
