2. Pluto TV: free movies in a live-TV format
Pluto TV works in two different ways. Select On Demand when you want to choose a movie yourself. Select Live TV when you are happy to browse scheduled channels, including channels that may be showing films without requiring you to pick a starting title.
The live-channel model feels closer to traditional cable: the programming is scheduled, and you cannot necessarily start any movie at the exact moment you want. On-demand titles provide more control, but the selection changes regularly. This makes Pluto useful when you want something to watch now, less reliable when you are searching for one specific documentary.
3. The Roku Channel: check the “Free” label carefully
The Roku Channel offers free movies, classic television, and free live channels through Roku devices and the web. Its important distinction is that the broader Roku interface can also show content available only through a paid subscription or rental.

When browsing, use the Free movies & TV section and choose a title marked Free. Do not assume that every result in a search is included at no cost. This simple check avoids the common mistake of selecting a film that looks available but leads to a rental, purchase, or subscription screen.
4. Plex: a useful second catalog
Plex provides free, ad-supported movies and television as well as live channels. To browse, select Browse Movies & TV Shows, then choose On Demand.
You do not need an account to watch Plex’s free content. A free account adds features such as a watchlist and personalization, which can help if you are comparing several films. A paid Plex Pass is not a way to make this catalog ad-free: Plex says advertisements remain in its free streaming catalog.
Plex is worth checking after Tubi, especially when a general search does not find a title on the first service. As with the other ad-supported platforms, availability changes.

5. Kanopy: often the strongest option for documentary viewers
Kanopy is different from the commercial free services. Access depends on a participating public library or university, and you generally need a library card or institutional login. Its catalog is particularly useful for independent films, classic cinema, documentaries, and international films.
To get started:
- Select Get started.
- Choose Find your library.
- Select your library and enter your library-card number and PIN or password.
- Create a Kanopy account if prompted.
- Use Search to find a film, and check its ticket requirement before playing it.
Many public-library titles use a monthly ticket allowance. Kanopy also identifies some films as unlimited viewing; titles found with the 0 tickets filter do not use tickets. Your library may impose temporary access limits or offer a different catalog from another library, so having a library card does not automatically guarantee Kanopy access.
6. Hoopla: borrow films with your library card
Hoopla lets patrons of participating libraries borrow digital movies, television programs, ebooks, and audiobooks. Sign in through your library using your card, select a movie, and borrow it according to the library’s lending rules.
Hoopla is a particularly useful alternative when a documentary is not on an ad-supported service. It is not universally available, however. The library must subscribe to Hoopla, and each library sets its own monthly borrowing limits. If the service rejects your card, that may mean your library does not participate rather than that your card is invalid.

7. PBS: the most relevant free source for many documentaries
PBS is one of the first places to check for documentaries, public-affairs films, arts programming, and selected feature-length programs. You can watch through PBS.org or the free PBS App, and many videos require no payment or account on the website.
The limitation is time. PBS programs may only be available during a particular streaming window. Some extended-access titles require PBS Passport, which is a benefit for eligible supporters of a local PBS station—not an entirely free movie service. - Review the listed provider.

What about Freevee?
Amazon Freevee was a legitimate free option in 2024, but it should not be presented as a separate current destination without explanation. Amazon announced in November 2024 that it would phase out the Freevee branding and move its free content into Prime Video. Amazon’s free titles remain separately labeled from paid Prime content, so look for the free designation rather than assuming that every Prime Video result is included.
