They’re the Deadlights: a glimpse of the entity behind Pennywise, not ordinary lights or an object lodged in his throat. In the series’ mythology, seeing them can overwhelm and immobilize a person.
What are the lights in Pennywise’s mouth?
They are the Deadlights, described in the story’s fictional mythology as a visible glimpse of the entity’s true form. Pennywise’s clown appearance is a shape the entity takes; the lights signal something far stranger behind it.
The official Warner Bros. Discovery series announcement identifies IT: Welcome to Derry as based on Stephen King’s IT and as expanding the vision established in Andy Muschietti’s films IT and IT Chapter Two. It does not explain the Deadlights themselves; that specific explanation comes from secondary coverage, including Collider’s explanation republished by Headtopics.
What happens when someone sees the Deadlights?
In the series’ depiction, exposure to the Deadlights can leave a person entranced or immobilized. The exact effect should not be treated as a universal rule across every version of IT: portrayals and outcomes vary between the novel and screen adaptations. The available explanation does not support a blanket claim that every person who sees them will die, go insane, or be affected in precisely the same way.

How does the series fit into the IT story?
Warner Bros. Discovery describes the series as based on King’s novel while extending the film vision developed by Muschietti. That context helps explain why the Deadlights are a familiar part of Pennywise’s mythology, but the studio’s announcement is not a production explanation of this particular mouth effect. No creator or production-team statement explaining how or why the effect was made appears in the official press material cited here.
