Spoiler warning: This article explains the first season of Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why, including its ending and storylines involving suicide, rape, sexual assault, bullying, harassment, grief, and trauma.

The thirteen “reasons” are the people and events Hannah Baker connects to her death through a set of seven audiotapes. In tape order, they are Justin Foley, Jessica Davis, Alex Standall, Tyler Down, Courtney Crimsen, Marcus Cole, Zach Dempsey, Ryan Shaver, Sheri Holland, Clay Jensen, Bryce Walker, Hannah herself, and school counselor Kevin Porter.

The series does not present these as thirteen equally serious or independently sufficient causes. Instead, Hannah’s tapes describe an accumulation of humiliation, betrayal, privacy violations, sexual violence, grief, isolation, and failed adult intervention. Some characters directly harm her; others contribute to a wider chain of events; and Clay is explicitly treated differently from the others.

The 13 reasons in tape order

Season 1 is structured around thirteen tape sides. Each side focuses on a person Hannah believes played a significant role in the deterioration of her life. The order is important because the events build from rumors and social cruelty toward more direct violence and institutional failure.

  1. Justin Foley — Tape 1, Side A

Justin is connected to the rumor that follows Hannah’s first kiss with him. He takes, or allows others to circulate, a sexualized photograph associated with the encounter. What Hannah experienced as an innocent moment becomes gossip that damages her reputation.

The show also links Justin to later harm involving Jessica, but the central subject of this first tape is the rumor and the image. Justin’s failure to stop the story helps establish the pattern in which other students treat Hannah’s private life as entertainment.

  2. Jessica Davis — Tape 1, Side B

Jessica becomes angry after Alex ends their relationship and assumes Hannah was responsible for the breakup. Influenced by the rumors surrounding Hannah, Jessica insults and slaps her in public.

For Hannah, Jessica’s actions represent the loss of a friendship and another example of people accepting gossip instead of asking what actually happened.

  3. Alex Standall — Tape 2, Side A

Alex creates a list ranking students according to physical characteristics. He places Hannah in a sexualized category, turning her body into a public subject for classmates to judge and discuss.

Alex later regrets making the list, but Hannah sees it as part of a larger escalation. The list normalizes objectification and gives other students permission to view Hannah through a degrading rumor rather than as a person.

  4. Tyler Down — Tape 2, Side B

Tyler photographs Hannah through a window without her consent. The image includes an intimate moment involving Hannah and Courtney.

Hannah experiences Tyler’s behavior as stalking and a serious invasion of privacy. The photograph becomes another potential source of gossip and humiliation, reinforcing her sense that she cannot control who observes or exposes her.

  5. Courtney Crimsen — Tape 3, Side A

Hannah turns to Courtney while she is feeling isolated. Courtney is worried about protecting secrets of her own, and after the two are photographed together, she denies or distances herself from Hannah.

Hannah regards this as a betrayal. Courtney had an opportunity to offer solidarity, but instead protects her own reputation and contributes to the rumors surrounding Hannah.

  6. Marcus Cole — Tape 3, Side B

Marcus arranges a date with Hannah and then humiliates her in public. He touches her without her consent and treats the encounter as a joke.

His behavior shows how the rumors about Hannah have become permission for other students to disregard her boundaries. What begins as a date turns into sexual harassment and public degradation.

  7. Zach Dempsey — Tape 4, Side A

During a classroom exercise, students anonymously leave encouraging notes for one another. Zach steals the notes intended for Hannah.

This act may appear less dramatic than some of the later events, but Hannah interprets it as another removal of the small sources of kindness that might have helped her feel noticed and valued. The tape illustrates how cumulative harm can include apparently minor acts when someone is already isolated.

  8. Ryan Shaver — Tape 4, Side B

Ryan publishes a poem Hannah wrote about her emotional pain without asking permission. He sees the poem as a literary opportunity, but Hannah experiences its publication as the public exposure of something private.

Ryan’s actions deepen Hannah’s feeling that control over her own story has repeatedly been taken away from her. Even her attempt to express difficult emotions becomes material for someone else.

  9. Sheri Holland — Tape 5, Side A

Sheri is driving Hannah home when she hits a stop sign. Rather than report the damage, Sheri leaves the intersection in a dangerous condition.

A later crash at that intersection kills Jeff Atkins. Hannah is traumatized by the chain of events and by Sheri’s decision to protect herself instead of taking responsibility. Sheri’s tape therefore connects Hannah’s personal suffering with grief and the consequences of an avoidable failure to act.

  10. Clay Jensen — Tape 5, Side B

Clay is different from the other people named on the tapes. Hannah says that he does not belong there as a direct cause of her death. She includes him because he mattered to her and deserves to understand what happened.

During their intimate encounter, Hannah tells Clay to leave, and he does. Clay later feels guilt about that decision, but the season makes clear that Hannah is not assigning him the same kind of blame she assigns to people who bullied, exploited, assaulted, or abandoned her. His tape is primarily about connection, regret, and the possibility that someone who cared about Hannah might understand her experience.

  11. Bryce Walker — Tape 6, Side A

Bryce is associated with the season’s most direct acts of sexual violence. Hannah witnesses him rape Jessica while Jessica is unconscious at a party. Later, Bryce rapes Hannah in a hot tub.

These events represent a major escalation from rumor and harassment to rape. The show places Bryce’s conduct within a culture of sexual entitlement, objectification, and impunity, while still distinguishing his direct violence from the other forms of harm described on the tapes.

  12. Hannah Baker — Tape 6, Side B

Hannah’s own tape is not an admission that she alone caused her death. She reflects on her worsening hopelessness, withdrawal, and inability to see a way forward while coping with the cumulative harm she has experienced.

Her inclusion of herself complicates the title. Hannah is trying to examine her own decisions and emotional state, but the story does not establish that she is simply another person to blame. Her tape emphasizes internal suffering and the way repeated trauma can narrow a person’s sense of possible choices.

  13. Kevin Porter — Tape 7, Side A

Kevin Porter is the school counselor Hannah visits when she is in crisis. She communicates that she is suffering and wants her situation to stop, but Porter does not recognize the seriousness of the danger or provide an adequate protective response.

Hannah’s final tape treats this failed counseling encounter as the last major institutional failure before her death. The ending shifts the focus from individual classmates to the adults and systems responsible for recognizing danger and connecting a student with meaningful help.

Are these really thirteen separate causes?

Not in a simple, literal sense. The series uses the word “reasons” as Hannah’s way of organizing the experiences she believes contributed to her hopelessness. It is not a scientific demonstration that each person independently caused her death, and the show does not make all thirteen actions morally or factually equivalent.

Bryce’s rape of Hannah and Porter’s inadequate response to a student in crisis are qualitatively different from Alex’s list or Zach’s theft of encouraging notes. The events also have different degrees of directness: some involve deliberate violence, some involve betrayal or reckless decisions, and some become significant because they add to an already mounting sense of isolation.

A more accurate interpretation is that the tapes describe a chain of cumulative harm. Rumors make Hannah a target; objectification and harassment reinforce the rumors; privacy violations remove her sense of control; betrayal leaves her without trusted peers; sexual violence causes further trauma; and the failure of adults to intervene leaves her without adequate support.

Why is Clay on the tapes?

Clay’s inclusion is one of the season’s most important qualifications. Hannah does not present him as someone who deliberately harmed her in the same way as the other people on the tapes. She includes him because he was important to her and because she wants him to hear her account.

Clay’s tape also shows how guilt can affect someone who was not responsible for another person’s death. He wonders whether leaving when Hannah asked him to was a mistake, but respecting someone’s expressed boundary is not the same as causing the later tragedy. The season uses Clay to connect the mystery structure to Hannah’s lost relationship and to show a listener processing grief and regret.

How does the Netflix series differ from the novel?

The television series is adapted from Jay Asher’s 2007 novel, which uses the same central premise: after Hannah’s death, Clay receives recordings explaining the people and experiences she associates with her decision. However, the adaptation changes names, chronology, visual storytelling, and the scope of several plotlines.

One clear example is Sheri Holland. In the television series, Sheri is the character involved in the damaged stop sign and the later crash that kills Jeff. The novel uses the name Jenny Kurtz for the corresponding character. The show also expands the sexual-assault storylines, the school-accountability themes, and the experiences of characters such as Jessica and Justin.

Readers who want to compare the two versions can look for Jay Asher’s original novel. The Razorbill paperback associated with the Netflix-cover edition is listed as ISBN 9780451478290 and runs 320 pages. Availability and edition design can vary by country and retailer. What the title means

The title refers to Hannah’s thirteen tape sides, not to thirteen interchangeable villains. The recordings are her attempt to impose an order on experiences that felt increasingly chaotic and uncontrollable.

The structure also makes the audience reconsider how ordinary cruelty can accumulate. A rumor, an insulting list, a stolen note, an unwanted photograph, and a failure to report a dangerous road obstruction do not have identical consequences. Yet, in Hannah’s account, each contributes to a world in which she feels exposed, disbelieved, abandoned, or unsafe.

That framing should not be read as a justification for suicide or as proof that suicide is an inevitable response to bullying or trauma. People who are being harmed need immediate support, safety planning, and professional care—not blame, revenge, or the expectation that they must leave behind a perfect explanation.

Content and viewing note

13 Reasons Why contains depictions and discussions of suicide, rape, sexual assault, bullying, harassment, substance use, grief, and trauma. The first season’s subject matter can be distressing, particularly for viewers with personal experience of these issues.

If this story connects to something happening in your own life, contact local emergency services or a crisis service in your country, or tell a trusted person who can stay with you and help you reach qualified support. If someone may be in immediate danger, do not leave them alone and seek urgent help.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is the first reason in *13 Reasons Why*?

Justin Foley is the first person on Hannah’s tapes. Tape 1, Side A focuses on the rumor and sexualized photograph that follow Hannah’s first kiss with Justin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who is the last reason in the tapes?

Kevin Porter, Hannah’s school counselor, is the final person named. Hannah presents his inadequate response to her crisis as the last major institutional failure before her death.

Is Clay Jensen responsible for Hannah’s death?

The first season does not present Clay as responsible in the same direct sense as the people who intentionally harm Hannah. Hannah says he does not deserve to be on the tapes as a cause of her death; she includes him because he mattered to her.

Is the list the same in the novel?

The novel and television series share the tape-based premise, but the adaptation changes names and expands or alters several events. For example, the show uses Sheri Holland, while the novel uses Jenny Kurtz for the corresponding character.

The Bottom Line

The thirteen reasons in season 1 are Justin Foley, Jessica Davis, Alex Standall, Tyler Down, Courtney Crimsen, Marcus Cole, Zach Dempsey, Ryan Shaver, Sheri Holland, Clay Jensen, Bryce Walker, Hannah Baker, and Kevin Porter. Hannah’s tapes are best understood as an account of cumulative harm—not thirteen equally serious, independently provable causes and not a claim that suicide is inevitable or deserved.
