A YouTube channel that streams continuously is a different thing: it is a 24/7 livestream on YouTube, not automatically a FAST channel or part of a television FAST service. You can build one around a prerecorded playlist or live-originated programming, provided your channel is eligible and you have the rights to everything you broadcast.
What “FAST channel” means
FAST stands for free ad-supported streaming television. The industry explainer cited here uses the term for a linear, scheduled, always-on channel funded by advertising. That is a useful industry description, not a formal standards definition. A FAST service distributes channels as part of its own television-streaming offering; a YouTube livestream is hosted on YouTube. The two may share a continuous, scheduled format, but they are not interchangeable.
What you need before starting a 24/7 YouTube channel
Confirm live-stream eligibility
YouTube Help says a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to enable live streaming. Check eligibility before buying equipment or building a schedule. YouTube lists mobile, webcam, encoder, and console methods; an encoder is one supported route, not a requirement to own dedicated hardware.
YouTube Help describes the purpose of the feature this way: “Live streaming lets you interact with your audience in real time with a video feed, chat, and more.”

Choose a format and clear the rights
Decide whether the channel will loop documentaries, present a scheduled collection of programs, or carry live-originated programming. Before scheduling anything, establish that you have the necessary rights for every film, clip, soundtrack, photograph, graphic, and other element. Continuous scheduling makes it especially important to review the entire library, not just the first program.
- Record the source and permission or licence for each item.
- Check whether the permission covers online streaming, the territories you intend to reach, and the planned duration or repetition.
- Use original or properly licensed music and visuals in intros, transitions, and interstitials as well as in the main programs.
- Review YouTube’s current rules and monetization policies before relying on a particular type of reused or third-party content. Rights clearance and platform monetization eligibility are separate questions.
How to run the continuous YouTube feed
1. Choose how the programming will reach YouTube
Use a YouTube-supported streaming method that fits the source. YouTube documents encoder streaming for productions involving gameplay, overlays, or production gear, and also lists mobile, webcam, and console methods. A prerecorded schedule generally needs a playout workflow that can send the selected videos as a live stream; YouTube’s setup guidance does not prescribe a particular playout product.

Decide whether the source is a computer you operate, a dedicated encoder, or hosted playout. Compare the options by whether they handle prerecorded playlists or live-originated material, how they support monitoring and recovery, whether you can run one continuous feed alongside separate broadcasts, and the total operating work and cost. No particular encoder model is required by the general setup guidance.
2. Set up the stream and protect its key
In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and use the stream key and connection details provided for the chosen streaming method. Enter those details only in the encoder or playout system you intend to use. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to the channel. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the sending system.

Before committing to a continuous run, send a private or unlisted test if the channel’s setup permits it. Confirm that the picture, sound, transitions, and program order are correct from a viewer’s perspective. The exact encoder settings depend on the source and the method you choose; the available YouTube materials cited here establish supported methods, not universal bitrate, resolution, or keyframe values.
3. Build and test the schedule
Prepare the playlist or running order, including transitions and any breaks. Test the handoff from one item to the next, check audio levels and synchronization, and verify that the feed continues after a source file ends. Decide who will notice a failure and what they will do: a continuous stream needs an operational plan for monitoring and recovery, even if the programs themselves are prerecorded.

4. Keep one-off broadcasts distinct when needed
If you use YouTube’s Live Streaming API, think of the continuous feed and a separate event as separate resources. YouTube’s API documentation gives the example of a channel running a 24/7 feed while creating a separate broadcast for an interview. That separation is useful when the regular schedule should continue independently of a one-off program.

Common problems and practical fixes
- Live streaming is unavailable: confirm channel verification and check for a live-stream restriction within the preceding 90 days before troubleshooting the encoder.
- The stream does not start: compare the stream key and connection details in YouTube Studio with those entered in the sending system. Replace an exposed key and update the sender.
- The picture or audio is wrong: test the actual feed, not just the playlist files. Check the sender’s output, audio routing, synchronization, and transitions before returning to a long run.
- The feed stops between programs: reproduce the transition in a short test, then check whether the playout workflow continues after a file ends and advances as intended.
- A scheduled interview interrupts the channel: plan the interview as a separate broadcast rather than assuming it must replace the continuous feed; YouTube’s API documentation describes this continuous-feed-plus-interview arrangement.
- Ads do not appear consistently: ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads, and monetization is subject to eligibility and settings. Do not infer a technical failure or expected income from an empty ad slot alone.
