Facebook Reels are Facebook’s video format for creating, editing, watching, and sharing clips with music, original audio, text, stickers, effects, and other tools. Public Reels may be recommended to people beyond the creator’s friends. Meta is also merging more of Facebook’s video experience into Reels, so the labels, duration limits, and editing controls you see can depend on your app, device, account, and rollout status.
What is a Facebook Reel?
A Reel is a Facebook video post designed for quick, swipeable discovery. You can record one or more clips, select videos or photos from your device, and add music, original or permitted audio, text, stickers, filters, effects, and a timer. Facebook may show Reels in Feed, the Reels or video area, search, and personalized recommendations. See Facebook’s overview at Facebook Help Center.
Reels are not defined permanently by being short or vertical. Vertical framing remains a practical choice for phone viewing, but Meta’s newer transition documentation says Facebook videos and Reels can be any length or orientation as the change rolls out: Facebook’s video-to-Reels update.
If your Facebook and Instagram accounts are linked in Accounts Center, the publishing screen may also offer Instagram sharing.

Facebook Reels versus regular videos

Facebook renamed the Videos tab the Reels tab in June 2025, but the transition is not identical for every account. A guide that says every Reel is always under 90 seconds may describe only one app version or publishing path.
How to make a Reel in the Facebook mobile app
- Open the Facebook app and, from Feed, tap Add new or the Reel creation option.
- Tap Reel.
- Record clips, or select videos and photos from your device. Allow camera-roll access when prompted; on Android 14 and later you can usually grant access to all or selected photos and videos.
- Add, remove, or rearrange clips, then trim or edit them.
- Use the available tools to add music, permitted audio, text, stickers, filters, effects, or a recording timer. Feature availability varies by account and platform.
- Tap Next.
- Write a description and add optional hashtags. Hashtags can help people find a Reel in search, but they do not guarantee recommendations or viral reach.
- Choose the audience, review remixing, and review the Instagram-sharing option if it appears.
- Tap Share now or Share reel. You can save a draft instead and return to it later.
Facebook Lite has a more limited editor. Its Help Center documentation describes a combined limit of 60 seconds and up to 10 clips: Facebook Lite instructions.
Music and audio rights
A song available in Facebook’s composer is not automatically cleared for every commercial use. Availability can differ by country, account type, device, and licensing changes. For business or monetized work, use audio you own, Facebook’s options whose terms fit your use, or music with explicit commercial permission. A Reel can later be muted if rights change.
How to upload a Reel from a computer
- From Feed, click See more.
- Choose Video, then Reels.
- Click Create reel and then Add video.
- Select a file and trim it if necessary.
- Click Next, add a description or hashtags, choose the audience, and select the remix setting.
- Click Publish.
Facebook says music, effects, and multi-clip editing may require the iPhone or Android app. If those controls are missing on desktop, edit a finished file elsewhere and upload it, or switch to mobile. The documented desktop flow is at Facebook Help Center.

Choosing who can see a Reel
- Public: Anyone, including people outside Facebook, may see it on or off Facebook, through sharing or recommendations.
- Friends: Your Facebook friends can see it.
- Friends except: Friends can see it except people you exclude.
A locked profile cannot choose a Public audience. Treat Public as genuinely public: avoid private addresses, school information, license plates, identity documents, or other sensitive details.
Cross-posting from Instagram
When accounts are linked through Accounts Center, Facebook may show a toggle to share a Reel to Instagram. Facebook also provides a setting for automatically sharing future Facebook Reels to Instagram, although the path and availability vary.
Cross-posting does not create one identical audience. If no Facebook default audience is set, Facebook says a Reel shared from Instagram may default to Friends for a private Instagram account or Public for a public Instagram account. Instagram followers and Facebook friends are different groups. Details are in Facebook’s audience guidance.
Remixing and reuse of public Reels
Remixing lets another person create a Reel using eligible material from a public Reel. Where the control is available, you can disable remixing before or after publishing. Facebook also says the original audio from public Reels may be used by others under its rules. Review these settings if reuse matters to you: audience and remix information.

Limits, length, and orientation
There is no single reliable duration limit for every Facebook user in 2026.
- One current Android Help page still describes a 90-second limit: Android instructions.
- Facebook Lite documentation describes 60 seconds and up to 10 clips: Lite instructions.
- Meta’s newer transition page says videos and Reels can be any length or orientation as the rollout proceeds: transition details.
Follow the limit and format accepted by your own composer rather than assuming an older universal rule.
Managing a Reel after publishing
Facebook’s Reel management tools can include editing the description, reviewing Reel information, changing the audience, changing remix settings, pinning or unpinning a Reel on your profile, pinning a comment, downloading your own shared Reel, sharing future Reels to Instagram, and deleting a Reel. Controls vary by platform.
Change the audience on desktop
- Open your profile and click Reels.
- Open the Reel and click Options.
- Choose Edit audience, select the new audience, and save.
Facebook notes that this desktop control is not available to everyone; if it is missing, try the iPhone or Android app. Management guidance is at Facebook Help Center.

Downloading your own shared Reel is different from downloading somebody else’s content. Saving or bookmarking another person’s Reel does not give you a copy to republish, and deleting your post cannot remove copies, screenshots, or versions shared elsewhere.

- Use an external editor for exact cuts, captions, transitions, brand layouts, reusable templates, batch production, or one clean master for several platforms.
Canva is aimed at templates and branded content (pricing). CapCut offers mobile-focused effects and timeline tools, with region-dependent plans (product page; pricing guidance). Adobe Express is suited to Adobe users and teams; its business page lists team pricing and a two-seat minimum, which may not fit an individual (business pricing). None is required to make a Facebook Reel.
Common problems and fixes
The Reel button is missing
- Update Facebook and check Add new, Video, or the profile’s Reels tab.
- Try the mobile app if you are on desktop.
- Check camera and photo permissions.
- Facebook Lite and test interfaces may expose different controls.
The video is longer than the stated limit
Check the limit shown in your composer. The 60-second Lite, 90-second app-specific, and any-length transition documentation can all apply to different experiences.
Music disappeared or the Reel was muted
Licensing may be geographic, account-specific, commercial-use restricted, or changed by the audio owner. Replace the track with currently available audio, use original audio, or use music whose commercial permission you have verified.

Friends cannot see the Reel
Check the selected audience, whether your profile is locked, whether Instagram cross-posting applied a different Facebook default, and whether the post is still processing, restricted, or deleted.
Instagram sharing is unavailable
Confirm that the accounts are linked in Accounts Center, that the Instagram toggle appears during publishing, and that the media or audio is eligible for cross-posting.
The video is cropped
Keep faces and essential text away from the edges, preview the crop before publishing, and export a clean file without another platform’s watermark. Orientation options may differ during Meta’s transition.
