Archaeologists working at sections of the Great Wall of China have uncovered weapons, stone projectiles, architectural remains and objects of daily use—not a documented hoard of gold or jewels. These finds help explain how the wall’s defenses worked, how its structures were built and altered, and what happened to them after they were abandoned.
What did archaeologists find at the Great Wall of China?
The discoveries vary by site. At Jiankou, a December 2025 report described a large cannon, weapons, architectural components and everyday objects from an excavation of three beacon towers and connecting wall sections. At Badaling, a Beijing archaeology summary reported stone projectiles and a stone artillery emplacement. Research-led work at Dazhuangke documented foundations, a gate and signs of the wall’s condition after abandonment.
In this context, “lost treasures” is best understood as a broad description of historically valuable evidence. The reports cited here do not describe a cache of precious metals or jewels.
Jiankou: a cannon, weapons and everyday objects
A report published by China’s State Council Information Office on December 2, 2025, said excavations at Jiankou covered three beacon towers and connecting wall sections. The finds included a large cannon, weapons, architectural parts and objects used in daily life. Shang Heng, an associate research fellow at the Beijing Institute of Archaeology, was cited in the report. Read the State Council Information Office report on the Jiankou excavation.

Together, these categories offer different kinds of evidence: the cannon and other weapons point to the site’s defensive role, while architectural components and household objects can help researchers understand the built environment and ordinary activity there. The published summary does not provide enough detail to assign every object a precise use or date.
Badaling: evidence of how the defenses were equipped
Beijing’s October 13, 2023 archaeology summary describes several finds at Badaling. It reports a stone artillery emplacement on a solid beacon tower, 59 stone projectiles in a building provisionally interpreted as a weapons store, and more than 400 stone projectiles inside two beacon towers. The summary characterized the latter discovery as Beijing’s largest such find at the time. These are counts from the reported local excavations, not estimates for the entire Great Wall. The distinction between evidence and interpretation matters: the 59 projectiles were found in a building that archaeologists preliminarily identified as a weapons store. The emplacement and projectile concentrations help show how defensive equipment was positioned or kept, but the figures alone do not establish how often the weapons were used.
Dazhuangke: what remains of a wall after abandonment
At Dazhuangke, archaeology was integrated with restoration planning rather than focused only on collecting portable objects. A June 10, 2022 report on research-led restoration says the work clarified beacon-tower foundations and design, the structure of a gate, the wall’s condition after abandonment and the effects of vegetation. The findings informed conservation decisions. Read the State Council account of the Dazhuangke restoration archaeology.

That evidence broadens what counts as a discovery. Foundations and construction details can reveal how a defensive structure was assembled; traces of deterioration and plant growth can help conservators decide how to stabilize it without treating the site as if it had remained unchanged.
How Beijing is using archaeology and technology to protect the wall
Beijing’s Great Wall protection regulations took effect on March 1, 2026. In an announcement dated March 4, the Beijing Municipal Government described measures including remote sensing, mapping, 3D modeling, digital archives, monitoring and visitor controls. These are Beijing measures; the announcement does not establish that every Great Wall section elsewhere follows the same system. Read Beijing’s announcement on its Great Wall protection regulations.

Read together, the Jiankou, Badaling and Dazhuangke findings show why Great Wall archaeology is about more than spectacular objects. Military equipment helps illuminate defense; projectiles and an emplacement provide evidence of how fortifications were equipped; architectural remains help explain construction; and deterioration evidence supports conservation.
